The remains were identified by bi-communal teams of scientists working at the Laboratory of Forensic Genetics of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, and the CMP Anthropological Laboratory.

The families of the exhumed persons – 13 Turkish Cypriots and 15 Greek Cypriots - will be personally notified by members of the Committee on Missing Persons on arrangements concerning the remains, including their eventual return.

It’s been learned that the bodies identified belongs to Alaminyo martyrs and that the remains will be handed over on a date to be set by the families themselves.

It also noted that the remains will be buried at the sites to be determined by the families of the missing persons.

The CMP also called on the media to `show due restraint and to respect the privacy of the families concerned at this particularly difficult and emotional time`.

Meanwhile, a special desk has been set up in the UN-controlled buffer zone with the aim of providing information to the families of the missing persons.

The UN Special Representative in Cyprus – Chief of Mission Michael Moller welcomed yesterday’s announcement by the Committee on the Missing Persons.

In a written statement, Mr Moller said `this is indeed a sensitive and emotional time and I would add my voice to that of the CMP in urging everyone to exercise all due restraint in commenting on these developments and that the privacy of the affected families be respected by all`.

Mr Moller expressed his sympathy on behalf of the UN to the families of the missing persons and expressed the hope that the families will find relief and solace after so many years of uncertainty about the fate of their relatives.

According to official figures, there are a total of 1,970 missing persons - 502 Turkish Cypriots and 1,468 Greek Cypriots- who went missing during intercommunal fighting and wars in Cyprus after 1960s.

Until now, the Committee on Missing Persons exhumed the remains of 300 missing persons within the framework of a project being realized for the last two-and-a-half years.

The Committee is still continuing its exhumation work in both sides of the island.
