The ceremony started at 10.00 with the laying of wreaths at the Limassol-Girne Martyrs Monument in Girne – where most of Turkish Cypriots from Limassol now live.
It continued with the observance of one-minute silence and the shooting of guns in memory of those killed during the resistance.
And, the flags were hoisted to the National Anthem.
In a speech at the ceremony, Erbil Aydınova – an official from the Cyprus Turkish Fighters’ Society said that the 21st December 1963 attacks had sparked the `Bloody Noel` events and that 51 days after that date Greek-Greek Cypriot duo had chosen Limassol as its next target.
He said that Turkish Cypriots had waged a heroic struggle in the city although they were outnumbered by attacking Greek and Greek Cypriot forces.
Mr Aydınova said that it is worrying that Greek Cypriots are still continuing the armament it started in 1955.
Providing a short summary of the bitter experiences of the past, he called on the youth to learn from the past.
The ceremony ended with poems read by students.
Prayers were also said for martyrs at the Ağa Cafer Paşa Mosque in Girne. |
