How good are the brakes

I drive a late model Toyota 4wd as a daily vehicle, for a vehicle weighing two tons the brakes are very responsive. Now I know I'am going back 37 years but the power assisted discs on the Mustang are very hard, by comparison. Before I bought my car it spent a long time in storage & I have never had the brakes inspected although they appear to work fine I hav'nt attempted any emergency stops, I guess the front pads & rear shoes could be glazed, from old age & lack of use.Question is: should I be able to detect some modern feel if the pads & shoes were replaced, has any forum member recently done any brake work, what were your results?
