Searching through old posts I have found a high torque starter 2-1883 FD1., from nations starter & alternator. Does any member know if these will correct hot start problems. Also I'am intending to fit an auto trans oil cooler,to try & keep temps down, with little hope of finding an original can any one recommend a brand or model?
Cheers
Brent
Update:Nations also suggest 2-2071ND Denso Style, as it has more torque??

Brent. I think it was a year ago we beat this thing to death. It appears a few of the purists were more interested in originallity than solve the problem. That's OK, I'd rather drive the car trouble free. I had such heating problems I rarely drove the car.
I did 3 things and the 429 starts every time no matter how far I drive the car or how hot it gets, without hesitation. I replaced the hooker headers with stock exhaust manifolds, installed a Hi-torque starter and put an aluminum wrap around the starter from Summit. Haven't had ONE single prob in 6 years. The starter I bought was from a small one man starter company from Lake Havasue AZ. It's been so long ago I don't think I have the information on the supplier. I put about 1500 miles a year on the car...If all else is good, this will do the trick. I'm not sure the mfg makes a big difference but will see if I can find the info...
Hi Ron,
Thanks for the info on Summit, I will follow that up also, I have a supplier for the starter, he has also recommended a later model so I will go with that. Also had an old school mechanic who tuned the carby & altered the timing, its running sweeter than ever & the heat has reduced significantly, but I will still go with an oil cooler to reduce the heat further.
Brent..Good idea. I'm sure you'll find those changes will make a significant difference. By the way, my comments were not made as an indictment of members on this forum, just differences in how to solve problems. I remember taking to you some moths ago about a water wetter or heat reducer for you radiator. Were you able to obtain more info on that item?
Hi Ron,
The Water Wetter seemed Ok untill the first hot days city driving. It still got very hot trudging along in traffic, to a point where I gave up driving it, just in case it stalled, then it would not even crank to start.I splashed out & bought race coolant ($300aus)which is supposed to have a 190 celsius boiling point. As I couldn't get all the old coolant out of the engine this product is somewhat distilled, but again a small improvement. The alteration to the timing has made the most effect to date. I'm determined it will run correctly at the end of the day!!! To be fair to the car its spent a bl**dy long time sitting,so now that I have moved house to a less populated part of sunny/hot Queensland I'm starting the engine each day even if I don't drive it far. Thanks for your interest I will keep all informed.
I like the 7 blade flex fans. The clutch fans work but fail sometimes.
Have you painted your radiator???
Sometimes the wrong paint or multi layers of paint will insulate the core and not let heat transfer. There is a special radiator paint that is very thin and made just for this purpose.
Radiators also get deposits inside and need to be cleaned or rodded out.
Is your heater core hooked up and do you have a heater control valve in one of the hoses.
If you bi-pass the heater core (hose, nipple to nipple) it also bi-passes the thermostat and will get hot.
Another lesson on my car. I ran a short bent hose between the 2 heater hose nipples, water pump to intake. It ran hot. I blocked the hose and it runs cool again.
Yes the heater is hooked up & operational although I dont use it here? I have changed the thermostat (twice) I think its a 180 degrees, someone said to drill a small hole in the thermostat as well???
I have fitted a high torque starter motor, (how good are these) also a thermo fan & an auto trans cooler, along with a second temperature gauge.(All these add ons can be removed without any damage to the original car.)
With the new fan & oil cooler covering most of the condenser the car runs slightly higher on the open road but is now contained at 200 in slow traffic.Amazing how accurate the original temperature gauge reads to the new gauge.Happy to have a drivable car again.
