A brief historical note on the 75th Anniversary of Reverso

March 24 2006 at 5:44 PM
  (no login)

There are many versions of Reverso (I mean Reverso, not just the less significant reversible watch) histories floating around the industry, in fact, several subtler versions have appeared in different books, which may or may not be accurate (Personally, I would not take stories linking Reverso and Edmond Jaeger too seriously as Edmond Jaeger died in 1922).

(Cesar De Trey)

According to the late Cesar De Trey at least, the idea of Reverso originated from a challenge by an unnamed Polo player in 1930, when the player allegedly shown Cesar his watch with a broken glass (no sapphire crystal then) after a Polo game in India.

(Interesting to note that the original drawing submitted to the patent office was a square Reverso)

Cesar De Trey entrusted the work to a French engineer Alfred Chauvot, who started work almost immediately and on 4th March 1931, supposedly under the instruction of Cesar De Trey, Chauvot applied for the patent of "a watch capable of sliding into its base and of turning completely on its axis".

(The 2001 Septantieme, the first time the Grande Reverso was introduced)

Cesar De Trey then "bought" the Reverso patent from A. Chauvot in July 31st 1931, before the patent was actually deposited, and by November 31st, Cesar De Trey has together with business partner Jacques David LeCoultre (both were close business associates even prior to this) established the company, "Specialites Horlogeres".

(Jacques David LeCoultre)

In 1933, Cesar de Trey "sold" the patent to "Specialites Horlogeres" and "Specialites Horlogeres" apparently with Jaeger's (then managed by Gustave Delage) blessings, officially becomes Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1937.

(The original 1931 drawing)

Since the launch of the first Reverso in 1931, Reverso watches were supplied to many luxury watch brands including Cartier, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin etc. There were also early Reverso found with Tavannes movement, apparently before the modern Jaeger-LeCoultre could get its act together to supply to "Specialites Horlogeres" (Like all traditional houses, Jaeger-LeCoultre's 130 plus years of history has its ups and down).

(A newspaper Advertisement in 1932)

Today, after 75 years of Reverso, the act of turning the watch to another time zone as the plane landed has become the ultimate cool act of "inadvertent attention grabbing"

(A newspaper Advertisement in 1940)

Like all classical Icons, the original "Sport" Reverso has gone through several transformations. From the Classic in 1931, Grande Taille Reverso in 1991 (60 eme), the first Grande Reverso in 2001 (Septantieme) and this year's Reverso Squadra launched in Jaipur Polo Ground on 26th February 2006; all models are still distinctively Reverso without sacrificing the original DNA.

(The Reverso Classic photos at the top row and the Reverso Squadra at the bottom, keeping the DNA)

In fact, Jaeger-LeCoultre will perhaps be the only brand where all 4 historical sizes, i.e. Reverso Classic, Reverso Grande Taille, Grande Reverso and Reverso Squadra (after SIHH 2006) are still in current production and still being delivered to retailers and distributors constantly, a feat which SHOULD satisfy even the emotional and the dogmatic traditionalists.

(From the left, The 1931 Reverso (Classic), The 2006 Reverso Squadra World Chrono (Squadra), The 1991 Reverso 60 eme (Grande Taille))

This act of constant renewal without forgetting the old die-hard fans should be commended, in my opinion.

Part 2 - A brief look at the three 2006 Reverso Squadra(s)

March 24 2006, 7:53 PM

(1931 Reverso Drawing)

According to Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre, in the early thirties, their engineers were simultaneously at work on two Reverso-related designs which were differentiated principally by their contrasting case shapes. The first was rectangular and went on to leave an indelible mark on the history of 20th century watchmaking. The second design, by contrast, which was square, remained a secret; it was felt that the time was not yet ripe to introduce a timepiece of such uncompromisingly modern proportions.

(Chief Designer Janek Deleskiewicz & Reverso Squadra)

Today, at a time when even Grande Reverso(es) are spotted on both men and women's wrist, much to the delight of he Manufacture, it is perhaps time to unveil the boldest and most masculine watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre ever, The Reverso Squadra.

(Marketing & Communication Director Stephan Belmont, his Reverso Squadra obviously charmed his lady dining partners)

Although the Squadra should be known as the 75th anniversary shape of the Reverso, the 3 Squadra(s) are only preludes to the other Reverso and perhaps to an ultimate Reverso () to be unveiled in SIHH 2006.

Nice (though probably too big for me)

March 26 2006, 3:44 AM

The watches look nice, though they are probably too big for me (I have a Heuer Monaco which I almost never wear).

Two questions:
1. Why does the Automatique only have 50 hours power reserve and the two chronos have 65?
2. Do you have price indications for the two chronos?

Regarding practicality, the Worldtimer function looks super cool, but the time zone travelers would certainly prefer a second hour hand or the two side mechanism as the Duo or Grande GMT offer.

Size matters...

March 27 2006, 6:55 PM

Thanks Jaw for the great intro!! Very irresistible!!

Until we can try on our own wrist, otherwise it looks pretty LARGE in size (from given measurements) that may not fit most skinny wrist.

However, lately, some designs have done pretty good job, particularly curved lug ends and very flexible strap/bracelet adjustment (MC bracelet is a good example), which fits & looks much better even with large dimenssions, while others may just look like a big block of metal (like Tag monaco, but its for their vintage style I guess). Can't wait to try Squadra! For sure I MUST get one if fits me.

It will be my 2006 wishlist!

Another observation

March 26 2006, 11:48 PM

I faintly remember that we discussed the size of the XGT two years ago. It was argued that JLC did not go for the bigger case in order to keep up with the trend but purely for technical reasons (8days movement, big date etc). While I somewhat bought this argument then, I don't see it with the Squadra. Let's face it, every serious watch maker can produce the complications of the Squadra when the case is 50 time 34 mm. To combine a GMT function with a Chrono is a standard complication of the ETA 7750, the Volkswagen Beetle of automatic movements. So what gives these watches an edge?

Regarding design, I appreciate that JLC sticks to classic Reverso design elements but I am pretty sure that next summer the Squadra will be the star at Canal Street, ie we will see a lot of fakes of this watch around the globe.

Just my two cents

Sebastian

Hi Jaw. Thanks for the report. I was kinda hoping that they'd have a manual wind,

March 27 2006, 1:17 AM

time only squadra. Are they coming out with a manual version?

Also, is this being marketed as an elegant sports watch of sorts as opposed to say, the GT and XGT reversos in general?

Thanks, Jaw!

Part 3 - A brief look at Reverso a Eclipses

March 24 2006, 9:50 PM

(The Reverso a Eclipses, opening the dial)

(The Reverso a Eclipses, closing the dial)

The Reverso a Eclipses was just a matter of combining 2 fine forms of art being practice by Jaeger-LeCoultre.

The 1910 a Eclipses was a pocket watch, a mysterious pocket watch which can conceal and reveal a secret dial as the owner wishes. In recent years, the work of Miklos Merczel & Sophie Roche team of enamellers have been clamoured by a niche but growing group of enthusiasts.

(The 1910 drawing found in the manufacture)

The Reverso a Eclipses is possible mainly due to the increasing research into watchcase technology by the Manufacture and the ability to improve and miniaturize the pocket watch from the inspiration by the 1910 drawing found in the factory.

As the first dial opened by turning the wheel at the 1.30 mark, the exquisite enamel work of Miklos &/or Sophie, now fully protected under the sapphire glass, will reveal itself to the watch owner.

And because the dial is now protected under the sapphire crystal, Miklos and Sophie are now more bold and has experimented on many new secret techniques to make the eventual enamel dial more intense and saturated in colour.

In the Grand Feu technique for example, Enamel based substances are initially (virtually) colourless. There are then tinted with metallic oxide in the form of extremely fine powder that is soaked with water to form a kind of smooth, more or less liquid paste. Fusion occurs during firing. The final colourful results bear little resemblances to the initial appearance. Each enameled miniature involves its own chemical secrets in order to obtain the distinctive colouring effect. Given it is now protected by a sapphire crystal, the artist has created new and even more brilliant and intense colour. And has develop a secret production process with a subtle play of temperature

(Jaeger-LeCoultre CEO Jerome gave a speech at the a Eclipses launch in Jodhpur Umaid Bhagwan Palace, India)

The translucent enamel is also used, this is a technology used since the Reinaissance period. Combining engraving skills with a transparent layers of enamels. The subtly engraved parts are amplified and the play on light creates a unique effect of depth.

Guilloche motif is separately engraved by hand or with pantograph in the hollowed area. This motif composed of tiny waves creates the illusion of sunburst or radiant effect. The effect is especially stunning after it is coated with several layers of translucent Enamels firing.

(Both sides of the solid 18k gold plate was fired to make the inner enamel dial)

(Patented in 1910, used only in large pocket watches until today

Reverso a Eclipses:

In Grande Reverso case except with only 11mm thick

The details of the new Reverso a Eclipses are as follows:

Grande Reverso size, thickness of 11mm

Case has 271 parts, including 192 alone in the miniature chain mechanism

Idea First patented in 1910, it was done only in large size pocket watches to conceal and reveal secret dials as wish.

Your assumption..........

is correct. After wearing them big watches(must sit nicely on my wrist,no protuding), can be hard to go back to smaller sizes of course I still do like and wear my smaller size watches as well, sometimes .

I don't dismiss a watch on case size alone. I look at the overall package : case size, dial(thin bezel makes a watch looks bigger than it is), thickness, comfort, lugs (not extending out)and proportions are some of the factors, so there are some big watches I dislike and there are those I just love

Part -4, a very brief note on the new Reverso Duetto Duo

March 25 2006, 4:49 AM

(The new Reverso Duetto Duo, The front Dial, the watch volume is about 94% of the Grande Taille)

In the haute horlogerie sector where sales are increasingly dominated by novelties, a lot of high-end brands have lost their comfort of depending mainly on their "Bread & Butter" Cash Cow. Reverso Duetto however defies this trend by consistently being the best sellers in the female segment for JLC.

(The new Reverso Duetto Duo, The reverse dial with the second timezone, around noon)

Following the discontinuation of Reverso Gran' Sport Lady, it is both natural and logical to expect a new 2 timezone Duetto, and in 2006, the new Reverso Duetto Duo is exactly that.

Wait, are you saying that this Duetto Duo can come quartz?

March 27 2006, 7:53 AM

It says in the spec sheet that it has the 846 (Duo-Face mvt), or it has the 608 (quartz). Is this correct for this watch?

Sorry, no... quartz is a choice for Reverso Lady Jewellery (Dame)

March 27 2006, 2:13 PM

This one, somewhat similar but one sided (Should have separeted the two models better)

Reverso Duetto Duo is only available in mechanical two timezone movement

Part 5 - the final part, a few words from JLC CEO Jerome Lambert

March 25 2006, 5:34 AM

There will be more excitements come SIHH 2006.

Not only are the novelties interesting, most in fact will present incredible values for the serious enthusiasts.

As for the ultimate Reverso, MJLC CEO Jerome Lambert assured collectors that ¡°It will be beyond every expectation and no one today can guess the complete features of this watch".

And I incline to agree...

What a great collection the Reversos have become! I am looking....

March 25 2006, 6:41 AM

forward to the rest of this report following Basel. My interest is especially in nascent pre-Squadra sizes. JLC is moving forward with watch development in very innovative ways. Thanks, Jaw, for keeping us abreast of these innovations.

Many thanks Jaw for a terrific report!

March 25 2006, 2:33 PM

Where do I begin? The history lesson was quite interesting and very informative. The new 2006 pieces from JLC are quite impressive. They reinforce, at least for me, that the manufacture has once again positioned itself at the forefront of innovation in this industry. Over the last few years, JLC has consistently delivered some of the most fascinating watches each year. Mind you, I am actually saying this prior to the announcement and unveiling at SIHH of the "ultimate" Reverso. JLC has clearly established itself as a leading manufacture of the finest timepieces as they continue to impress observers and collectors alike.

We'll be looking forward to your future reports on other JLC pieces. Can't wait to see what else is coming!

Thanks again Jaw!

Shame on me

March 25 2006, 4:39 PM

I dissed a new release for its size before I saw it up close. What great technology, engineering and aesthetics. Too bad that I am too small to wear these behemoths. Hopefully, Jaw's hints at some further surprises in the coming year are the harbinger of something I can wear. Well done, Jaw. As always, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

My thanks Jaw for a wonderful history lesson and report...

March 26 2006, 9:58 PM

I will admit that the styling and mechanics of the world time chrono is arguably the best of any on the market (and far better than others contained in round non reversing cases).

I also thank that the rotor on the other Squadra's is very nice, but I still wish that they had made one or two in the Squadra line up a little less on the large size so that it can be warn on all wrist sizes. It is also worth complimenting MJLC that they maintain all Reverso's: perhaps some the R&D on the larger sizes can filter down into new products in the lesser sizes.

Very intrigued as to what the 'ultimate' Reverso will be. Needless to say I check this forum about 48 times a day (minimum) awaiting news.

My thanks again Jaw

I`ve looking for. Due to my liking for big watches, this new Reverso range might be it.
Can`t wait to see them.
Thanks Jaw for your report and interesting historical insight of the Reverso.
