QantasLink is to launch flights between Cairns and Port Moresby on 1 July 2010, subject to regulatory approval.

QantasLink will operate the latest of its new 74-seat Q400 aircraft between Cairns and Port Moresby, offering 12 return flights and 1776 seats each week.

QantasLinks expansion into Papua New Guinea heralds the first arrival of a Qantas aircraft into the market since 2002. This expansion has been made possible by an investment of over $600 million since 2006 in a new fleet of 21 Q400 aircraft, said QantasLink Executive Manager, Mr Narendra Kumar. We are delighted to be able to provide business travellers in particular with significantly improved facilities and comfort when travelling between Cairns and Port Moresby at jet-like speed on the Q400.

The initial schedule will be:

- Twice daily Monday-Friday with flights departing Cairns at 05:45 on Monday and 06:45 Tuesday to Friday, and departing Port Moresby at 08:15 on Monday and 09:20am Tuesday to Friday;

- A second afternoon departure from Cairns at 15:15 Monday to Thursday and 16:15 on Friday, and from Port Moresby at 17:45 Monday to Thursday and 18:45 on Friday; and

- Daily weekend flights offering an early morning departure and late afternoon return.

With a flight time of only one hour and 45 minutes the new services will provide seamless connections to other Qantas and QantasLink services across Australia, Mr Kumar said.

To celebrate the new destination, QantasLink is offering a number of launch fares on sale until 5 June 2010 inclusive, for travel between 1 July and 31 August 2010, including:

- A$349 Cairns-Port Moresby return;
- A$469 Brisbane-Port Moresby return;
- A$549 Townsville-Port Moresby return; and
- A$649 Sydney-Port Moresby return.

Why should we be celebrating? This is to commemorate the latest series of ways in which our kina are leaving PNG and PNG is becoming steadily more impoverished.

These flights are to serve the fly-in, fly-out consultants and LNG expat workers who don't care to spend their earnings into PNG but to take not only all our resources but also our money out of the country.

Obviously an elite. Sadly the great majority of PNGs don't have the money even to take long distance PMV. Do you care?

You must be drinking!

Mines haven't created any lasting development for PNG. Look at what little the billions of kina worth of exported gold & copper have created up at Tabubil for the local people and after you've done that,visit the other mines too. Panguna anyone?

You must blind or retarded or both!!! Go up to Tabubil and look at the infrastructure that was put in place and while your at it ask the local worker who paid for their training and housing??? Oh thats right you havent been up there and are talking out of your arse!!!

As for the millions of dollars created in "Royalties" ask MRDC and the these type of agencies set up on behalf of landowner groups, where the money is!! Ask them for the balance sheets. Ask the landowner groups how they have spent their money!!! Dont blame the mining companies for poor financial management and gov corruption.

As for Panguna it was the land owners that shot themselves in the foot...so dont complain about development you idiot!!

Tabubil will be a ghost town and everything will collapse when the mine shuts down. Ask Richard Jackson, an expert.

Are ghost towns a good development for PNg?

Welcome to the Global Community wantok!!! This is business!!!! Not charity and foreign aid donations. PNG needs to get away from the handout and foreign aid mentality and start working its resource sector and really compete in the Global Community.

What are you crying over???? You cry poverty yet cant see beyond your short stubby nose the benefits and economic spin offs that the LNG will bring to PNG.

People like you need to get off of your arse and work.......not whinge and complain about how poor you are and recognise the opportunities that are being given to PNG.

All Qantas is doing is encouraging flyin, flyout and there are plenty of countries in the world who just don't tolerate that nonsense. Do people fly to Aussie mines from outside the country just for work, then fly back out again to Fiji etc? I don't think so. PNG lets itself get stripped bare of money again and again. I agree that this whole situation looks sweet on the surface but is rotten to the core.

Anonymous,
please get you facts atraight first.

Plenty of Australian mines operate on a "fly in fly out basis". The workers are flown home for a couple of weeks every month. If not that,
then they are flown home for their annual leave.

Admitti\edly, not many of them are overseas workers, because we havea fairly large skilled workforce. However, an example of "fly in fly out", was the operators of the large horizontal boring machines, being used to make the road tunnels in Brissie recently. They were initially all foreign domiciled operators. (French I think)

Please stop this "poor victim me" mentality that is pervading PNG. Get the training, and go and work in the extractive industries in PNG yourself. Many of my PNG friends do so, and they are making lots of money.

Mi tok stret. Moni i no kamap long diwai antap.

Regards......Ralph

Unfortunately, the 'extractive industries' tend to bring the long term result of greater impoverishment of the average customary landowner and their families, particularly villagers with little western education. Is that okay by you so long as some Papua New Guineans are making heaps of money in the process? If you reply that the villagers should get more educated, my reply is that you should come look at the overall state of our government education system and ask yourself how anyone can get a decent education out of it. Those of us who are fortunate to be well educated either went through a completely different education system, with many expat teachers or we were amongst the fortunate few to get international standards or overseas schooling.

What a load of rubbish.....the people bringing impoverishment to PNG are its corrupt leaders. Stop burying your head in the sand.

The PNG government should have put in health, education and social infrastructure and use the resources to bring about better economic growth. Instead all the money goes into their pockets and houses overseas, and foreign bank accounts. What dont you understand about this.

You fail to miss ineptness of the PNG gov and its cronies and blame all the troubles on the mining industry......again and again. WAKE UP!!! Stop whining and whinging!!!
