I took a small section of hair about 1" back from the hairline on each side and slightly above eyelevel. If your hair is longer, you could start them lower, but mine was limited by the length. Then I braided each section in a simple braid, secured with a small band and used a bobby pin to attach each braid to the base of the other. Then I did a reverse roll braid on each side, covering the ends of the crossed braid. Instructions for that are here: http://www.dressytresses.com/hair/gallery/instruct/reverse-roll/

However instead of securing with a clip, I used a tiny band on the end of each rope then gathered all my hair into a ponytail and secured it with the flexi-8. Because my hair isn't very long, the bands at the end of the ropes fell exactly under the flexi-8. With longer hair, I think it could be really pretty to use the two ropes and the rest of your hair to do a simple braid for a bit before securing....
