really the only way but to strengthen your hair and prevent damage you might like to try oiling or catnip (there's a whole thread on it at TLHC but you probably need to be a member to read it) or henna/cassia. Apparently henna or cassia (if you don't want colour change) form a layer around each hair shaft and so helps to strengthen it.
I've not found the twirling method of dusting to work. I prefer to either sit in a well lit place and just pull strands of hair at random over my shoulder and snip away at the split ends or to put my hair in a braid and carefully examine the tail for splits. This is really the easiest method and forces me to concentrate on the last few inches of hair which is where most of my splits are anyway.

Current routine: (Trying to keep it as simple as possible): WC on the weekend; scalp washes every second day; oiling 2-3 nights per week; S&D when I think of it; and dusting every 8-12 weeks.
Shampoo:
Organic Instincts diluted with herbal tea (rosemary and chamomile).
Conditioners:
A'Kin Protein or Moisturising Conditioner mixed with 1 tsp honey and 1 tsp coconut oil (dissolved in 1 tsp boiling water before adding conditioner).
Oils: Favourite is almond oil. Occasionally will use a blend of coconut, almond, olive in the ratio 2:1:1 in summer or as a deep oiling treatment.
Other: ACV infused with herbs (depending upon availability I use a selection of lavender, rosemary, cinnamon, sage, and thyme); BBB; wooden comb; Mason Pearson comb;
Logona herbal henna.
