Now that it is getting colder, what are some things you do differently?

What changes do you make in your hair care routine, and daily life when the weather turn cold?

For me these are my basic changes:

I use a heavier leave in conditioner/oil.

I turn on the humidifier.

I wear a warm hat that is usually satin lined.

I put my hair up under the hat, or I leave my hair tucked between my body and my coat when I'm in freezing weather, keeping hair protected.

I watch to see if my hair prodcuts are still working well or if I need to switch to something heavier/more moisturizing.

I are more aware of the need to deep condition more often, and do so.

What do you do?

I do the same exact same things...

December 4 2003, 8:26 AM

... only I haven't gotten into wearing hats yet since it's not too cold here yet (well, except for today!). I'm using a lot more conditioning leave-ins in the length of my hair and my BF is getting ready to install a whole-house humidifier, instead of having one just in the bedroom. I can feel the dry air already on my skin and lips particularly, so I know it's also affecting my hair. I've also noticed some static in my hair, but only when using one of my brushes that seems to really stir it up. I really hate the dry heat! It's so humid here in the summer that the dryness of heated air in the winter is pretty unbearable, but the humidifier will help!

So true!

When you are in humid climates, the change to dry heat really does seem to effect skin and hair quickly. At least we notice those changes.

Your whole house humidifier sounds nice! I know you will enjoy it!

It doesn't really get very cold here, but...

December 4 2003, 8:58 AM

It does get drier, so I do modify my routine a bit. I oil more often, and I have started using Fox's shea butter leave in (only modified slightly!). I also deep condition more often. The weather doesn't really change much around the year here... right now it's cool in the mornings and still quite hot during the rest of the day. The warmest thing you'll need for Bangladeshi winters is a light sweater .

That's the best part about the recipe...

Is that you can use any conditioner and any oil you want in it and it seems to work well! I hope you are enjoying it!

I just love this leave-in... I only have to use a tiny bit and a small batch seems to last forever!

Yes... a little goes a long way....

But it seems to work very well in small amounts. I am so glad you like it. I wish my package would arrive to you... I fear it is lost somewhere between our two countries.

I'm so glad you brought this up

December 5 2003, 3:07 PM

Because this is something I have not paid any attention to in the past, and I need to start! Winters here are fairly mild, but it can still get cold enough to warrant special treatment. Especially considering the extremely low humidity! My usually oily skin gets dry enough to have rough flaky patches. Now that's arid. So I'm sure my hair probably needs extra moisture as well.

Where do you get satin lined warm winter hats??? Or do you just line your own hats with satin? I know I should wear warm hats if I'm going to be outside for any length of time, but I usually hate the way they feel, and they get my hair full of static. But satin-lined sounds like a great option!

If you want to know the truth...

December 6 2003, 3:29 AM

I found great hats at.... Kmart! I even paid $1.00 for one I wear all the time. I got it at one of the stores that was closing. I think it would have been $12.99 otherwise. It is not my first Kmart hat though... my sis got me another for $3.00 that is another favorite. I should post a picture sometime. I get compliments so often when I wear them. They are fun, but roomy enough to tuck my hair up under, and fashionable enough to go with anything.

You might also want to invest in a humidifier. You can get them fairly inexpensively, and run it in the room you spend the most time in, or get a couple for various rooms. It can help sooo much.

No monoi on the days I am going outside

December 6 2003, 10:16 AM

I found that out the hard way Tuesday. I think it solidified onto my hairshaft

Try to wear my hair in buns most of the time. I am parial to earmuffs and a bun seems to be the best style.
I have also been wearing low ponytails so my little hat would fit on my head without popping off lololol

Keep my hair moisturized as much as possible. Do a little more EVOO treatments on my ends.

Great thread.
