Rant on ebay, updos and vintage comb collecting

January 27 2007 at 6:29 PM

I am having a very frustrating month trying to come up with an updo that will allow me to wear a Vintage Fan style comb. They either stick up too far above my head or the teeth dig down into my neck. I can't seem to position the comb so it lays closer to the head. The old combs have a bend in them I think because women wore false pieces and had ratted up the hair for the Edwardian look so flat hair doesn't have the space for the teeth to go into.

If anyone has an updo solution that doesn't require tons of pins so a comb with long teeth can be inserted let me know. I'll keep working on it till I come up with something someday.

I also have two of the long-wide back combs (like in Heidi's sig pix) but haven't found a place on my head where they don't collide with the millions of hairpins I have to use to hold up any updo. I don't want to distroy the comb trying to get it into my hair.

Second I am really irritated with an eBay obsessed buyer who outbids at any price anything vintage or Antique. She will pay well into the $100.00 and has to win. Her auction wins this month alone are $1000.00 and I tallied up her purchases since last spring (when she first registard with eBay) and they are over $10,000. I just wanted to add a comb or two to my collection but she goes to the extreme on every good condition vintage hair comb 0n eBay making it impossible for anyone who just wants one or two for personal use or collecion to win. I have watched her bid on a piece of junk $100.00 over the true value of the item (two vintage plastic halloween horn blowers). Her obsession has become my thorn and loss to buying any combs until she goes bankrupt. It's too bad because it will detract new ebayers from wanting to buy the pretty hair things and give up. I also think it's nice to have a few old things to wear in the hair but at this rate eBay isn't the place for that right now except for buy it now options. Maybe soon things will go back to normal I hope.

Well, she'll get tired of it sooner or later.

People like that nearly always do. XD Just wait it out and... try not to look at all the pretty combs you're missing out on. X_x

I don't use combs, so I can't help... Hope you find someone who can!

I hope

that she finally gets enough so that you can have a chance again.  No advice on updos, I'm still in kindergarten where updos are concerned.

Yikes! Have you tried asking her about it? It can't hurt to ask.

Sorry!

Its too bad that an agressive bidder is ruining the fun! I don't have too much to offer on the updos except that maybe going with a very retro style to better fit the comb might help. This site has very vintage hair style instructions: http://frazzledfrau.tripod.com/titanic/hair.htm

I have a spanish style comb I had the same problem with. It was not very expensive so I actually did some trimming and sanding of its teeth so it would be more wearable on me. Good luck!

On collecting hair combs....and idea for wearing....

January 29 2007, 1:48 PM

Goldenhair,

First on eBay rant. I do understand the frustration of not being able to get into the game with those willing to bid high. I am very curious what this bidder's screen name is on eBay. If you care to share privately, email me at heidi_woeller@yahoo.com

I'm sure you realize that eBay is a huge place for the world of very serious collectors, several of which I know personall. I know people who have museum quality collections numbering well into the thousand, and these often include quite a few from eBay. That's what you're up against. Some of these people also have a fair chunk of change to spend.

Nevertheless, there were some years ago a situation where two people worked in cohoots and bidded up each others items by bidding....and they ended up in a world of hurt via eBay. This does occur, so if you think this individual might be purposefully upping bids (although you state this person is winning and paying!) then you may have a legit complaint to bring to eBay's attention. However, if they bid, and win, and pay with no issues, then that's their right to spend whatever they want.

As for the fan style vintage comb in an updo, are you trying to get the comb to hold your hair? I assume not. You have enough hair to get a nice big cinnamon style of roundness in which the fan part will stick up above the head, which by the way, is how they were worn! The decorative element often showed above the head.

For fan hair combs, it's virtually impossible to avoid it sticking a fair amount above the head. The larger the comb, the longer the teeth, and the more it will be above the head. This is one factor I consider in my collection. I have some really, really big combs that I wouldn't wear because of size (in today's times it would simply look ridiculous), but I do often enough buy in sizes that I know will look really nice in an updo and not stick up so far.

Heidi, I don't know if you saw previously...

But Goldenhair had asked about how you did your style. I thought you shared that once, but could not find the post. Would you mind posting directions in the Styling Station for her? It would be nice to have it where it could be archived in a list. I would so appreciate it if you were willing!
