Conditioner and shedding

I've noticed that I shed a lot more if I get conditioner on or near my scalp. Does anyone else have this problem? Getting it all over my hair makes it easier for me to get the tangles out, and hopefully causes less breakage, but it also makes me shed a lot more and sometimes makes my scalp itch, so I'm not sure if I'm actually helping my hair or making it worse.

shedding

May 14 2008, 11:02 PM

I tend to shed more at this time of year regardless of what I do, just like my dog... I figure it's just the weather/seasons doing it. I always condition right to my scalp, as I don't have problems with excessive oiliness. Conditioner only makes my scalp itch if I don't get it rinsed well enough or if there is an ingredient in it that my skin is sensitive to. I've never noticed it increasing shedding for me, although I have noticed that sometimes air pollutants (eg - smoke) do seem to increase shedding.

I'd try a different conditioner...

If your scalp is itching and it is a result of the conditioner rather than the shampoo, try a different conditioner. A good one to try for scalp is Aubrey Organics GPB. Also, try rinsing with a light vinegar or lemon rinse as a final rinse. This should remove any residue from your scalp and leave your scalp at a proper pH level. This should help stop the itchies unless it is a reaction to an ingredient in the product. That is why I would definitely try a new conditioner, preferably a natural one if possible, without the added synthetics that can be so irritating to people like me!

Thanks for your help. Since I already use vinegar rinses, I'll have to see if I can find a new conditioner.

I do shed with most conditioners, I now use nothing but Nioxin's Scalp Therapy for my scalp and it's great- my shed rate has gone down. This is made to put on the scalp.
I do use heavier conditioners from the ears down, though, as I have chemically treated hair.
Right Now I'm liking Aubrey's Honeysuckle rose cond.
I cleanse, then put the Scalp therapy on my scalp and the heavier conditioner from the ears down if I feel my hair needs it.
I CWC every other day.
