Hello everyone.
Coming out of lurk mode briefly while I am someplace that has internet access. Since many of you here have spoken so highly of Aubrey's Primrose Tangle-Go spray I decided to give it a try for lack of anything else to help with my tangled hair. Well, I only used it once so far, but did spray enough to dampen the bottom half of my length. My main complaint is not how it works, but how it smells. It's been 48+ hours and my hair STILL smells like the spray. Way too strong perfumey/ floral scent that I really can't stand at all. I was hoping it would fade, but it hasn't. Anyone else encounter this? If I can't find a way to alleviate the overpowering scent then I won't give it another try.
I was looking at the ingredients, and wondering if I couldn't conjure something similar on my own with distilled water, vegetable glycerin, liquid lanolin, panthenol, EOs, aloe juice, a lighter oil, etc. Ideas? I am not even sure how easy the glycerin or panthenol would be to obtain.
Also, I am having troubles editing and shrinking the file size of a newer picture to change in my signature, if someone could email me privately please? Just remember that I don't have internet at home so it may be a while before I respond, though it should be within a week. blushing_viking(at) yahoo(dot)com is the one I check most often.
Thanks!
Bryndis

Past few months have been experimenting again. I "wash" on an as-needed basis, usually every 5-9 days. I make up a mixture similar to Willow's, with beer, egg yolk, and 2-4 essential oils. I am still hesitant to give up my conditioner because I feel it helps with tangles, but we'll see.
Coconut oil as needed.
Moisture spritz as needed (aloe juice, water, rosemary & ylang-ylang e.o.'s for scent)
Horn comb and HairSense "bone" comb.
Been months without using a brush (wooden, from Earth Theraputics)
Will update this as I go! (last updated January 2008)
the detangler from Aubrey - but I have the same issue with their shampoo. The scent smells "fake" even though they say it is all essential oils and such. WAY too strong and it lingers for days!!!
You could try the California Baby spray detangler. I use it on my daughter's hair and it's all natural and smells very nice and "fresh" not strong. I like it a lot.
thanks for the tip. I went to California Baby's website to check out their detangler, and part of their description is that is "perfumes hair." But, after your description of it I think I will give it a try next time I am at the store.
cheers,
Bryndis
I think to get a hold of liquid glycerin you'd have to ask a pharmacist...or look into a soapmaking book for sources. I'm not sure about the panthenol.
Have you tried diluting the formula with something else to make it smell less? I use the AO Sea Buckthorn spray and it REEKS. I'd quit using it if it didn't do such nice things for my hair.
After all that, I'm tempted to try out the California Baby spray that Mermayd suggested!

Isn't it funny how smells affect each of us so differently? I love the smell of the Tangle-Go and used it just this morning after washing - but I can barely detect the smell on my hair now. I don't usually like florals but like it and AO's Honeysuckle Rose poo and conditioner too. But, I know how it is when you don't like a scent; I won't use a product either if I don't like the way it smells.
Yes, you could try your own detangler using those ingredients. Figuring out the proportions will take trial and error, but it might be worth a shot. I make a detangler from a recipe I got online somewhere that I use mainly for "rejuvenatiing" my hair (rather than detangling) when it's dry, like when I get up in the morning and want to get out a kink or bend in my hair, or right before it's totally dry after washing to help my wimpy waves. I always spray it on my ends on non-wash days. Here is the recipe, just for info and maybe help you with the proportions of the one you might make. I really haven't tested the detangling properties of it since my hair doesn't tangle much.
Natural Detangler
Ingredients:
8 ounces distilled water
1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
1 – 2 drops glycerin
1 – 2 drops favorite essential oil for fragrance
30 drops grapefruit essential oil
8 drops jojoba
Instructions:
Combine in spray bottle. Shake before each use.
You can really play with it and come up with your own special blend with your favorite oils, scent, etc. With just the grapefruit essential oil it smells very light and fresh; I like it a lot. The other EO I usually add is a bergamot/grapefruit blend. You can research which EOs are best for hair and add them if you like the way the smell.
I love fiddling with stuff like this, but haven't had much time lately.

Avrilon sent me some as my Secret Santa gift, and her recipie works pretty well. Lately my hair seems inclinded to tangle. It even seems to tangle while in my nightly sleep bun. So I've been using her de-tangler in the morning, and it definately seems to help.
testimonial! Definately more motivation to try the recipe sooner than later. That, and the hope of finally finding something to help with these blasted tangles. Being on the fine side, my hair has always tangled wicked easy, but I think it has been becoming worse as I am being nicer when combing my hair than I used to be
love making my own products, from general toiletries/ hair care to household cleaners. But like you, real life has kept me from much experimentation lately. Thank you for the recipe, I am going to print it out and hopefully get around to trying it in the next couple months.
Man, I do envy all of you who don't have tangle issues. It has always been a problem with me, just moreso the past few years since finding the Loom and stopping with the rip-through-the-tangles-with-my-paddlebrush routine, which I knew was bad but perhaps I have learned some patience lately It's amazing my hair has been in decent condition for so many years around waist length and poor treatment (well, only in the sense of my brush and brushing method!).
I have used Tangle go for two yrs now and how i got used to it is weakend it with little bit of water. Now the smel is wonderful and love it, I find i can not live with out it.
Use a smaller spray bottle and add some water to it and it will lessen the smell of the primrose
I love that after you wash your hair and it;s been in my hair for a week or so and then when it get wet for washing it makes my hair feel like silk, and smells heavenly
mention that. I washed my hair last night, mainly because I just could not stand the smell any longer. I did not do anything differently, but wow! My hair was more tangle-free than knotted this morning when I was combing it out. There is still a faint smell of the primrose oil but perhaps I will experiment with the spray (since I have nearly a brand new bottle still) as a pre-wash treatment. Hmmmm.....
But like the others, feel you could make your own. I'll email you about the picture.

a bit of a strong smell for me, I bought some to replace my drugstore detanglers.
I do like it,though, it gets the job done- but I don't care for the smell.
I prefer Aubrey's Sea Buckthorn Leave-in- I'm on my umpteenth bottle of that stuff- they need to make a bigger bottle.

I can't use any of the Aubrey products because of the scent - I love how the products work, but the lingering smell gives me a headache. I've ended up giving away a ton of hair products because of strong perfumes. I developed an extreme sensitivity to smell when I was pregnant that over a year later has yet to go away. All of my products have to be unscented now, which is a pain.
