African Butterfly Clip/ problems

So after hearing about those "african butterfly clips" here on the Loom, I splurged and treated myself to one. I guess I missed the part about all the seems to be filed down on the combs. Haven't done that yet, but was trying it out a couple times. Well, it seems the combs are having a hard time being inserted into my hair, even when I it is more loose. It feels like they are catching on my hair (maybe breaking it?), and I have to really push to force the combs in. So, I haven't been wearing them for fear of damaging my hair. Interesting side note, I often have similar problems with hair forks, even when the tines are not close together.
Any ideas?

thanks!
Bryndis

Past few months have been experimenting again. I "wash" on an as-needed basis, usually every 5-9 days. I make up a mixture similar to Willow's, with beer, egg yolk, and 2-4 essential oils. I am still hesitant to give up my conditioner because I feel it helps with tangles, but we'll see.
Coconut oil as needed.
Moisture spritz as needed (aloe juice, water, rosemary & ylang-ylang e.o.'s for scent)
Horn comb and HairSense "bone" comb.
Been months without using a brush (wooden, from Earth Theraputics)
Will update this as I go! (last updated January 2008)

The only thing I can really think of is that you are starting out with your hair pulled up or twisted too tightly. Try it on a SLIGHTLY looser updo and see if that helps. Filing down those seams should help as well.  Keep us posted.

I didn't file down the tines, but that is a good idea. When you are inserting them into your hair, are you interconnecting the combs? In the instructions that came with mine, it said to do that. I have had a concern about them damaging my hair, but I have yet to find broken or severed off hairs. HTH!

Well...

...I have not had those problems and my hair is pretty thick. I got the ind for thick hair. There are no seams on mine. I did notice that sometimes, if my hair is too tight, it will catch, so I just take away some of the tension so it glides in smoother. I always gety compliments when I wear mine, and I hope yours starts to work for you!

thanks everyone/ file?

Yes, I have tried making my gathered hair looser, without much more success. Kara, my instructions also said to interlock the combs, which even without hair mine seem to only interlock about half of the tines. My concern is when I first insert the combs into my hair, before they are interlocked.

So... what kind of file do you all use to smooth out your hair toys? I only have some metal and wood files but they are too big to fit between the tines.

Thanks!
Bryndis
