Newbie seeking advice

Hello fellow long haired women! I am so excited that I have found this website. You all seem so kind, welcoming and full of knowledge on hair care. I have not yet created a signature but I have looked up the hair types. I think I am 1b/f/i. I might be a 1a/f/i. The reason I say I might be a 1a is because before I ever damaged my hair with perms, my hair was straight as a board (and seemed to be healthy.)Now that my hair is over-processed (which really didn't take much) it is kind of frizzy when it dries. Because of this I don't like to wear it down, but I wish I could. I currently use shampoo and conditioner such as Sunsilk, I wash everyday and I have to use gel to keep flyaways down. My goal is to find better shampoo and conditioner for my hair, not have to wash everyday and not use product as much as possible. I am also wanting to know what treatments I should try on my hair. I would love for my hair to no longer look and be frizzy, and overprocessed, but straight, healthy and shiny like it use to be. Does anyone have any ideas for me? I have been looking at the recipies on this website but I'm not sure which ones will be best for my hair type. I was thinking the "kitchen shampoo" to get rid of residue and then the "avacado wrap" for some nourishment. I am scared to unwisely experiment and that's why I need help. One more thing I should tell you is that cutting or trimming is not an option for me. I appriate any help you can share with me. I will get pictures posted soon.
Thanks, thanks and more thanks!
P.S. I don't know if this matters as far as giving me advice, but my hair is 30" long. My next goal is 42".

Glad you could join us here. I know what you mean by damaged hair. I used to bleach mine before I started growing it out. As far as experimenting goes, if you try natural things, you should not have any bad side effects. That is the best way to see what your hair likes and doesn't. You may also want to try pure aloe gel with a drop of oil to calm your fly aways instead of regular gel which is full of chemicals. Also try some deep conditioning treatments to nourish your hair. They have worked wonders for me. Again, welcome to the loom and happy growing!

Well, first you may want to try a clarifying wash to get any residue out of your hair that could be making it seem more lackluster and dull. You can find more info on clarifying in the library, or someone here may be able to tell you how they do a 'baking soda wash'. Then you will probably want to strengthen and moisturize right out of the gate. Plan on doing some type of treatment at least once a week for a while!

Also, some ladies here have discovered that the lathering agents in most commercial shampoos dry their hair out even more and so have switched brands & even made their own from stuff in their kitchens. Others have found that silicone-based products make their hair more tangle-prone, but others have found that it helps, so you may want to keep an eye on that as well!

Hopefully someone here can recommend a strengthening treatment - something with protein in it - that you can do. I haven't done any of those, so I can't help you there.

Moisturizing is one of the easiest things to do - you can go simple, and just oil your hair down really well and put it in a warm towel for an hour, or you can try making some of the great recipes from the Library. We've had some really funny avocado-related stories on here.

A lot of us here have figured out what works for our hair by simple trial and error - don't be afraid to experiment, because most of the stuff we experiment with won't hurt your hair...it just may not be 'right' for it! And you may end up trying something no one has thought of, and we LOVE product reviews around here!

Good luck!

I am a 1Bii. Right now I am using Aubrey's Honeysuckle Rose Shampoo and Conditioner and Nature's Gate Organics Biotin Shampoo and Conditioner. I like both. I am a former cone user, and after a trim last fall, am giving organics a try. I keep it pretty simple.

You might want to look at the ingredients of your shampoos & conditioners. If they are harsh they will not help with dryness.
Also, keep away from heat styling and deep condition regularly.

Just give it some time and you'll be wearing your hair down

Welcome!

I think you've gotten some good advice thus far. Experiment with the recipes you listed and see how it goes. May I ask why trimming is not an option? If your hair is damaged because of perming, then the only way to get rid of the damage is to trim it off. You don't have to do it all at once, but small trims make a world of difference.

My hair is stick straight as well and I find that doing a heavy oiling once a week keeps my ends happy. HTH!

WHy trimming is not for me

July 23 2008, 3:04 PM

Kara - I understand your view on trimming but to answer your question of why it's not an option for me is that the Lord has revealed to me a lot in His word about women's hair and not cutting or trimming is part of what He has revealed to me.
I noticed you deep condition on saturdays. Do you do equal amounts of those ingredients? Does that condition and strengthen? If so, I'd like to start doing that.
Thanks for your help.

I use...

July 24 2008, 11:16 AM

my own recipe. It is basically equal parts of: coconut oil, shea butter and jojoba oil with some EO's (lavender and rosemary are my favorite). I apply quite a bit until my hair is saturated. Then I leave it on for a day or so before shampooing it out. Sometimes it takes three shampoos to get it all out - that is three shampoos in one showering session! HTH!

There are some other gals here that believe the same as you about not trimming. I was just wondering if it was for that reason or for something else. I understand your belief and I hope we can help you keep you hair in good condition so that you don't have to trim.

Thank you

July 23 2008, 11:11 AM

Thank you all for responding so quickly. Thank you for the welcome. I have a few more questions...(sorry).
1. What kind of deep conditioning treatments should I use? I'm not really familiar with any that I should use on my hair. The only thing I'd know to do is go to the store and look on the shelf (I'm talkn' walmart ok) and I don't want to do that for sure.
2. Does hot water ruin/dry out the hair? I tend to take really hot showers and let it run from my head down and I just realized that might not be too good for my hair. I notice a lot of you do a cold rinse and a luke warm wash on the hair.
3. How do I know what ingredients are "bad" on commercial products?
Once again, thanks for all your help. You all have beautiful hair.

Hi Michelle,

Deep conditioning is a conditioning treatment you leave on your hair longer than normal. There are deep conditioning treatments listed in the recipe section of the Library. Here's the link:

http://longhairloom.com/haircarerecipes.html

Hot water can also dry your hair and scalp out. Hot water will also pick up more mineral residue from your water pipes and can actually end up leaving that residue in your hair. I love a good hot shower myself, but I've learned to put my hair in a shower cap on those days, and I've slowly trained myself to do just warm water on days I actually wash my hair.

And if I have a question about an ingredient, I run it through the Google search engine and try to read at least a few entries about it. If you want to determine if an ingredient is 'bad' for your hair, you need to have an alternative product that does not contain those ingredients so that when you use it, you have a basis of comparison. Many of us have found that we need to use a shampoo for at least three washes to gauge the full effect.

You can probably look at other people's hair types that are similar to yours for ideas about where to start. Most of our routines are in our signatures!
