Well lit subject, but dark background--how?

Greetings:

Can anyone who has seen the photography in the Japanese magazine "Armour Modelling" speculate on the techniques they use to get such impressive photographs? I’m knowledgeable on the basics of depth of field, focus point, and so on, but it’s the lighting that I’m most interested in. A lot of their photographs have well light models, but the backgrounds fade to darkness. Is this done using a huge black backdrop that is quite a distance behind the subject? Any idea what flash technique will get these types of results?

Thanks!
