The symbol of the person with the moon behind it is for night time portraits. What happens in this mode is that the camera's shutter is open long enough to catch the dim lights in the background and then the flash fires to illuminate the person in the foreground.
The crescent moon is for twilight photos (low light) so this might work better.
If the camera is zoomed all the way out (wide angle view) you should be able to get 2" away from the subject to take a photo. If you are 2" away and zoom in, it won't be in focus.
If you set the dial to P mode, then you can hit the menu and chage the ISO rating. I keep all my cameras to the lowest ISO to get the best quality images with little or no grain like I usually get on the higher ISO.
My suggestion is to set the mode dial to "P", ISO to 80, Turn on the 10 second timer, set the camera on the table or on a bean bag if you have one, place the item being photographed on the table also, press the shutter button halfway to allow the camera to focus, press it all the way down to start the timer and let the camera go. Be careful not to bump the table or the camera until it has finished taking the picture.
I have sample, but my computer at work (where I am writing this on a saturday) is blocking me from uploading photos. I'll try again at home and edit this message with the samples.
Hope this helps,
Val
