Camera settings to photograph documents and photos?

For those that visit archives and libraries, what camera settings do you use? I have a macro lens that enables me to go down to f/45, which I'm sure gives enough depth of field to bring the corners in clearly, but it results in a long exposure. Would giving shutter speed priority result in a better image?

Thx,
KL

No need to use F45

Documents and photos are usually pretty flat. Use a larger aperture and you'll get a faster shutter speed. If the pages are really bowed then just hold the page down flat by the edges.
