Practical experience with horse behaviour

Hi all,

New to this. Been using the forum on Monty Roberts site to get info. KAS on there advised me of your forum. Basically, Im working as a groom at the moment and also attending a course in SOTON uni in animal behaviour. My ultimate goal is to become an equine behaviour consultant. Although I get plenty of experience on the ground and riding at work I would really like to shadow somebody who is already doing what I want to do. Any offers or suggestion as to where to go. Im based in South Wales, I would love a permanent job doing this, if it is close to home. But I am willing to travel for work exeprience.

Any suggestions would be great. Also any comments on what this is like as a job. Already worked on one behaviour yard (no names mentioned) and broke my arm within days of arriving! Almost put me off, but absolutely adore working with horses, good or bad.

I am an excellent poo picker and would be prepared to muck in and out in exchange for some experience and advice froma knowlegable advisor.

Looking forward to replies!

You could try Heather Simpson, she has completed the Soton Uni course and now runs courses of her own in behaviour and has consultancy practice mainly small animals but equine too. She is always looking for working students, I worked there for a year on part time basis and learnt loads, not only the theory but lots of practical day to day management too.
Her website is www.naturalanimalcentre.com

Lucy.

Sorry forgot to mention she is based in Carmarthen.

have you had any luck?

i have just read your message about looking for work experience relating to equine behaviour.
i am also interested to gain practical experience and i was wondering if your searching has got you anywhere?
i am afraid i have no leads other than i do know where you can go for work experience if your looking for work experience involving riding nice horses in a proffesional yard who would be happy to have you- but they don't talk much about behaviour.
sorry i can't help but do you have suggestions for me- i'm even looking abroad, as thought it might be nice to couple work experience with travel.
all the best wendy

Please read the email that I was sent today. I used to work for Jennifer Johnson as a working student in the USA. I had a wonderful time and she is a fantastic teacher. Please email me at Jessicalittle44@hotmail.com and I will put you in contact with Jen. Also, please look at

Hi! Do you know of anyone who would like to be a working student in California? We usually hire a girl from Sweeden several months of the year, but she can't get her visa renewed. It's 6 days/week, no mucking, quite a bit of riding, possibly some teaching. There is an apartment and a car at Mill Creek to share with one other girl who is a working student for our dressage trainer. Salary is $200/week, I think.

Anyone who can get to my yard is welcome to come and get experience with the horses we have here. I have a number of unhandleds and horses with issues who are with me to have these issues resolved. Some of them are unhandled wild exmoors (off the moor) from the Moorland Mousie Trust, for whom I am a fosterer.

My yard is in Hampshire.
