| Field management: sowing seeds of what?July 19 2005 at 12:47 PM | Suz (Login illeroc) |
| We would like to sow some seeds in the resting bits of our fields to add variety to what's growing. Any advice on what sort of thing to go for and where to get it from?
Also guess you have to do it properly to stop birds just eating them all but any tips? |

Hi Suz,
I have always bought grass seed from Scatts in Godalming, it has good enough mixture of herbs, not just ryegrass. I sow poached areas throughout the year, but ideally, it should be done in the spring after chain harrowing the fields, and once the temperature stays above 5 celcius.

Oh you must sow the seeds of love, Suz!!!
Ahem.
I think the best you can do is have an analysis done, or at least determine what types of wild-flower/grasses can grow in your area. You can buy lovely mixes of herbs and grasses, but they won't grow if the soil isn't right!! Which can then turn into a reeet waste of money! Perhaps look around when you're out hacking for the cheapest option and research the herbs and flowers most beneficial to horses. If you want I can bring my Herbs and Phytopharmaceuticals book with me next time I come round? It gives you an idea at least of what you WANT to grow, then you just need to determine if it WILL grow! There are lots of seed merchants who will tailor a mix quite cheaply for you. |

Hi, Diane, Suz and anyone else who might read this! Sorry Suz this isn't really answering your questions, just asking more of my own!!
I am also interested in what would be good seeds to sow, we have a small (half acre) paddock at our new house which I graze my two on part time, plus 5 acres at my friends, both places need something done!
I am planning on putting in hawthorn hedges down sides (they grow well locally) and hope that some cow parsley will grow along the hedge. We are lucky in that we have quite a few dandelions, so I hope they will spread abit further. These are the three things that my big mare in particular loves to eat (hawthorn, cow parsley and dandelion). There is also a small patch of red clover which she likes and i am hoping i can encourage it to spread.
What I would really like to know is can anyone recoommend a good book on herbs, plants, trees etc? I would like something that tells you what is poisonous and what is not, and what the non poisonous ones are good for?
Also, I know Gary Holter speaks on medievel pasture etc, but I would really like to see some papers/articles on what horses ought to be eating herb/tree/plant wise that are not written by him? No offence Gary, I do believe you, but my scientific mind likes to see evidence and research to support things!! SO if anyone knows of any references at all along these lines please let me know!
Many thanks,
Helen |

For easier reading, I'd recommend A Modern Horse Herbal by Hilary Page Self. For more scientific info (which includes references) you need Herbs and Phytopharmaceuticals - I can't remember the exact title, but it's a guide for scientists/veterinarians and herbal practitioners. Should be lots of dosh, but can be bought cheaply on Amazon.
I'd also recommend Caroline Ingraham's book, whose title completely escapes me! I can't remember whether it's Animal Aromatherapy or Aromatics!!! GThat also has research data in it. Hope that helps! |
