As some of you know, I ride school and Cavalry horses only, not having one of my own. I’m allowed quite a lot of freedom at the school and would love to work with a Connemara pony who worries about his head being touched. I don’t believe it’s a physical problem, rather that he may have been treated roughly. I see him most Saturdays and Sundays. Do you think it would be possible to shape a plan and work on it just two days at the weekend, bearing in mind that several other people will handle him during the week?

Hi Frankie

Yup, I would say go for it, provided people don't still handle him roughly. If you teach him to trust that nothing bad will happen if he keeps his head still and someone during the week abuses that trust then it's a bit unfair. But if the people during the week are just "normal" then it should be fine.

If the school agree to it then you could put a notice on his door, explaining that you are working with his "head-shyness" and in the meantime please could everyone be considerate of him. Or whatever

Please let us know how it goes!

Catherine
