It is called a modesty sheet. It has a strategically positioned slit (with embroidered edges) that spread out over the female to prevent flesh to flesh contact during intercourse.
a 1995 article in The Jerusalem Times says, "[I]n Catholic Mexico of yore with the use of modesty bed sheets with carefully stitched and positioned holes in them."
It is believed to have originated as the result of the Catholic teachings that say that sexual intercourse is for procreative purposes only.
