FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT

by Doc (Login Doc_)
Forum Owner

Attention:

As a result of many complaints regarding the old forum, I have recently been in contact with their forum owner. To solve the issue, he has decided to redirect the link from the old forum to a new site. After corresponding with him, I have decided that it would probably be best to have only one forum for all of us to communicate. The site is only a couple of days old, but it looks like it has the potential to become very popular. Therefore, I will provide the link and hope that the inconvenience will prove to be of great benefit by providing an improved format for all of us to enjoy. I will leave this forum running for a short while until I am confident that all users have been properly notified of the change. Sorry for the inconvenience and I hope to see you all in the new forum.

Osteopathic Hospitals

by Anon (no login)

Just wanted to let people know about rotating at Osteopathic hospitals. Pennsylvania for instance will not accept osteopathic rotations for credit so you would have to redo those rotations in order to do residency or gain licensure. Pennsylvania has a boat load of foreign friendly programs.

Housing Link

by Anonymous (Login Doc_)
Forum Owner

Here is a link to a forum for med students (not just Spartan) to exchange info about housing arrangements. Could be useful for clinical students who are moving to a new city. Maybe some current students might also want to share some housing info from St. Lucia for incoming students. Just a thought...

Just accepted at Spartan-Lots of questions

by Whid (no login)

I just received my acceptance to Spartan for the May, 2003 class.Any information that you can give me about what to bring; if it is easy to arrange housing(especially since I will not be able to arrive until about 2 days before classes begin due to the fact that I do not finish my undergraduate classes until April 27,2003);do they help you to get clinical training in the US, or do they only use the Juarez, Mexico Hospital; and any other hints that you can give me to make the transition easier would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and thanks for this new Forum site. The other one seems to have gone from an informational site to an opinion- type site.I certainly can appreciate peoples beliefs and opinions, but it seems to be an inappropriate place to do it for us who would like to receive help in our new medical endeavors.

Whid:

First off, congrats on near-completion of undergrad and your acceptance to med school. This is a big step and I can understand your concerns. It has been a couple of years since I was a basic science student in St. Lucia, so if any of my info is outdated, I welcome any corrections from current students.

It is important to know that there are 2 airports in St. Lucia (I flew to the wrong one). The one in Castries (capital) is the choice for most airlines, but it is quite a drive from the school. The one in Vieux Fort is minutes from the school and has a flight from Miami (with a stop in Jamaica) via Air Jamaica. This plane is typically larger which allows more luggage. You can also ship things via Amerijet (I think) which has an office at the Vieux Fort airport.

There is plenty of housing close to campus with landlords who cater to students. Some people prefer to live further and choose to either rent a car for 16 months, ship a bike, or to use the free school bus (transport) which offers rides in the morning, lunchtime, after school and late night. They also schedule trips to the grocery store, town, etc. Housing is first come first serve, and upper semesters usually claim the best spots. But there are plenty of options available. I usually recommend Playboy (don't let the name fool you...he is a reputable St. Lucian businessman) as he offers a wide variety and even offers car rentals. BTW, don't expect anything remotely close to luxurious as the country is 3rd world, but you should find it sufficient. Most places come with pots and pans, but you may want to bring linens or purchase them there. The dress is casual (it is usually hot, humid, and rainy). Take a good flashlight. A good pair of sneakers or hiking boots might help. You can probably ask current students for a book list. You can order online or buy them used (recommended) from students. The campus has a basketball, volleyball and tennis court. SGA will provide the first 2, but take a racquet if you like tennis. There are also plenty of recreational activities around the island.

The school really pushes Juarez, at least as a starting point. But if you do well and pass Step 1, the school should help you find US rotations. If you want a specific location or starting date, I would recommend trying to set up your own.

Sorry for the long reply, but you asked general questions. If you want to know something specific, I will be happy to help out. Good luck.

To the person pretending to be others

by (Login Doc_)
Forum Owner

I have looked back on this forum and noticed that you have been using these tactics for years. What caused you to develop such hatred for Spartan and hostility for others? Wouldn't it be more effective to just honestly tell your story rather than your current method, or is the real story not that bad that you prefer to make up lies instead? Why do you pretend to be other people? Are you ashamed of who you are? Do you feel that people will give you more respect if you use someone elses name? What is your objective...to get revenge and try to close down the school? It is obvious that it is not to help the prospective students because you are not providing a constructive alternative.

I hope that you do not take offense to these questions as this is not my intent. Rather, I am attempting to start a dialouge to better understand your situation. Maybe we can convince Spartan to make some changes to resolve your issues for the benefit of future students. Who knows...I may even agree with your real story? I have also had bad experiences with Spartan. I have never attacked you, even though I don't condone your actions. In fact, I have always offered my help. I suppose I may have upset you by exposing your deception, but I did that in a respectable way. By the way, when I wrote that you are not welcome on this forum, I meant that your behavior is not welcome here. I am very willing to correspond with you in a respectable manner. I will even call you if you prefer.

The ball is in your court once again. Hopefully you will decide to call a truce so that we can move on. Best of luck in whichever road you choose.

Thank you for this new forum.Spartan is as good as any older carribean school, the only difference is at Spartan you have to work harder to obtain clerkships and the school must work harder in getting California approval as well as get stafford loans reapproved again,at other schools with the millions they are charging they can get anything with money.
myself as well as hundreds of other graduates never had major problems during our careers in the USA because we passed the exams and we were as qualified as any graduate from other med schools.
If you are good you can get anything even when the school is not approved in that State [lawyers in this country can get you anything if you are good].

Good luck

Welcome message from Forum Moderator

by (Login Doc_)
Forum Owner

Welcome to this new unofficial Spartan Health Sciences University School of Medicine Forum. Feel free to ask or answer questions, or to post your opinions and experiences of Spartan, whether positive or negative. Although I am the forum moderator, I am not an employee or in any other way representing the University. I recently graduated from medical school and I'm simply trying to provide a format for those interested in obtaining or sharing information about the University. I would also like to point out that I will try to be objective with my posts and, therefore, will attempt not to promote nor demote the University. Rather, I will try to provide honest information from my own experiences, both good and bad, and I encourage others to do the same.

If anyone should encounter a problem with any of the posters on this forum, feel free to post a message with your concerns. As many of you, I have a busy schedule and, therefore, ask for your patience and understanding as I may not be able to reply immediately. However, I will make every effort to address your concerns.

In addition, this is a work in progress and all suggestions are appreciated. I welcome all constructive criticism and any corrections to any of my statements.

Welcome and enjoy the forum!
