Hotkeys 1.51 - How to send keystrokes in a MS-DOS prompt or application.
by
In my XP machine, I can use Hotkeys to send keystrokes to the command prompt, as wel as to text fields in DOS applications which run under the commandprompt.
However Windows 95 and 98 (based on MS-DOS) do not receive Hotkey-keystrokes in the MS-DOS environment. Is this something I can fix myself, or is this a feature ??
I tried out many things and this looks a great program.
But I didn't find out how to keep down the shift key.
I need this to make a selection. I tied for exemple the sendkeystrokes "+{end}" but I didn't get a selected block of text.
Does somebody know a way around?
Be sure that "Fastkeys!" checkbox at lower left of the "Send Keystrokes" window is selected.
Be sure that the hotkey is enabled.
It seems to work fine for me even selecting text in this message edit window.
SHIFT+END (in hotkeys this would be "+{end}" without quotation marks) selects text from cursor position to end of line.
The only other thing I can think of is that (it seems) that I can have more than 2 or 3 dozen hotkeys per hotkey definition file some of the hotkey functions can get flaky. This is the only difficulty I have run into using Hotkeys with Windows 98se.
First of all, this forum is more alive than it looks. I got very prompt (extensive) reply from different people. Thank you very much.
But I didn't learn something new. So I tried the same on my Win98 laptop. And making a selection with hotkeys there was no problem.
This means something in winXP on my desktop is interfering. Maybe the fact that I use a graphical tablet instead of a mouse (although I only used keyboard-sendkeys).
I will try it out later when I install the mouse again and I will let you know.
One more question. You wrote: "be sure to select the "fast keys" check box in the "send keystrokes" window. I didn't see this box. I use hotkeys 2000 v 0.9beta2
Greetings
How to activate a partial windowname? For example activate the notepad executable with a certain opened filename. What I want is to activate a window with 'notepad' anywhere in the windowname
I haven't tried the latest version (Hotkeys2000b2-1) yet (I'm about to download it) - I'm still using 1.51. While some directories cannot be targeted with this version (directories with spaces mostly) I'd like you to know that it really is excellent software. Once you start using the shortcuts this becomes a must-have app & a real time & labour saver. I recommend it to everyone & I'm surprised MaximumPC magazine hasn't mentioned it yet in their periodic editors choice must-have-apps layouts. Maybe they don't know about Hotkeys... I tried other shortcut programs & they just wouldn't work reliably (if at all). So, in the way of feedback to you - great work - you've created, in my opinion, a wonder app

I totaly ignorant on how hot heys are program, that is why I'm posting this question. I have Belkin switch that gives the avility to manage several servers from one monitor. With a belkin switch you can press Scroll Lock + Scroll Lock and get a menu that allows you to switch to another server. My question, how can I create a hotkey that performs this function. I s a long story but this would realy be useful to me.
When you copy and paste a definition that sends keystrokes, and then activate the pasted definition assign it a different hotkey, then the new hotkey will not work as expected; instead it will activate some other hotkey.
To produce the bug, do this:
1. In your existing hotkey definition file, create a new hotkey to send keystrokes containing something like this: "/msg mv4u xdcc list" (don't enter the quotation marks). I assigned Shift+Win+4 as the hotkey.
2. highlight the new definition and right click and choose Copy
3. right click and choose Paste
4. edit the pasted definition so that it is active and uses a different hotkey (I assigned Shift+Win+5). You can also edit the hotkey so it sends different strokes, but the bug will still occur if you don't.
5. Save the hotkey definition file.
6. try using the hotkey when in notepad or an IRC window. ---> Notice that some other action may occur such as a different program opening or the window minimizing.
I produced the bug 2 out of 2 tries. The first time, Add/Remove programs kept appearing when I pressed the hotkey. The 2nd time, my IRC window kept closing. If I create the hotkey from scratch, then I will not have this problem.
I can't get it to print. Bidirectional or unidirectional.
I am using win98se and an old Panasonic KX-P1124 24-pin printer. I have spooling set on, but 2000 is taking up all of the processor time and spool is using nothing.
In order to proceed, I have to terminate the Hotkey 2000 process.
Will version 1.51 work with Windows 2000? I have an older version (5b2) that was working fine in Win 98, but I just upgraded to Win 2000 and it does not seem to work. If I use 1.51 can I still use my old hotkeys.hkd?
I have one that I use frequently and wanted to change it to someting easier to enter like ctrl + a,z,s or x, but hotkey would not function with any of those combinations.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?
These are combinations that are available to any Windows application unless the programmer has coded for this combination not to operate within his program totally or under certain combinations.
ctrl + a selects all of content within the focus window
ctrl + z undoes (usually ) the user's last action
ctrl + s saves the open file to disk
ctrl + x deletes the content that has been selected in the focus window
I would not suggest tampering with any of these keyboard combinations as often they will function when these commands via program menu selections will not operate as they are supposed to.
