The shock of total surprise

Response to With Beathan astride

The shock of total surprise showed plainly in Lisa's face. She liked and admired Beathan MacBeth, and had from the first moment she had set eyes on him. To tell the truth, she had been strangely and instantly drawn to him. But this was a totally unexpected development, following on the heels of the shocking revelation of his true nature. It was a hard fact to digest.

She had her studies to complete. All of her life her sole ambition was to become a doctor and alleviate suffering where she might do so. Did he ask her to give up her life's ambition to become his companion, whatever that might mean? Her confusion was plain to read in her eyes as she stared wordlessly at this creature of myth and fantasy.

"Beathan," she started softly and uncertainly. "I don't know what to say. You greatly honor me, I think."

She lacked all experience in reading a dragon's expression, but somehow he looked worried to her, but her words changed the uncertain whirling of those golden eyes and the broad muzzle wrinkled into what could only be taken for a smile, that exposed wicked dragon fangs. Somehow she should have been frightened, but there was an inexplicable expression that reminded her of a little boy who had asked for a treat and was uncertain if such would be his reward. She felt a sudden kinship to this mighty beast, that seemed totally absurd, and gay laughter bubbled from her throat.

"Beathan, I do not fully understand all the ramifications of what you ask, but trust that I will ever be your friend. Where that may eventually lead us, I have no idea. But I must complete my studies, nothing less will do."
