Episode Seventy-eight
Lucrecia cries as Diego explains to her how much he loves Victoria and how he’ll never be able to feel that way about Lucrecia. He tells her that everything she’s done to make him want her was useless and asks her to give him his freedom. Claudio and Banca hang out and she tells him that once her birthday arrives, she’ll be free to do whatever she wants. She notices what time it is and tells him that they have to go because her father will be angry. Constanza goes home and Ruben yells at her for leaving the ranch without his permissions. Gerardo rushes in and tells his father not to hurt his mother. Ruben yells at them both. Constanza takes pleasure in telling him that Patricio is the new executor of Don G’s estate. Patricio tells Florencia that he saw Diego and is sure that Diego knows something about her daughter that he doesn’t want to say.
Diego thinks about the kiss he walked in on between Victoria and Gonzalo. He tells Maria and German that he needs something to occupy his mind or he’ll go crazy thinking about the situation he’s in. He decides to go upstairs and rest. They worry about Diego and German asks where Edelmiro is. Maria tells him that Edelmiro is at the Montero ranch because he’s jealous because he saw Rocio talking to another man. They’re both certain that one of these days he’s going to get caught. At the Montero ranch, Edelmiro follows Santos around, but stops by Macario’s office. He watches as Macario and Gonzalo talk. Gonzalo lets Macario know that he’ll watch him closely to make sure he doesn’t try to stab him in the back. Macario tells him that he should trust and reveals to him that he knows one of his secrets and has never told a soul. Gonzalo asks if it’s about Amalia, but Macario tells him that he knows that he’s the one who killed Diego’s brother. Edelmiro hears everything as Macairo tells Gonzalo that he knows that that is the reason why Don G kept trying to buy Diego’s ranch so that Diego would leave and never come back.
Alex goes to Los Encinos and tells Diego that he got Macario to confess. Diego tells him that it’s a shame that he had to go to such extremes instead of just believing Carolina when she said it wasn’t true. Alex tells him that he’s right and realizes that he should have believed her. Macario tells Gonzalo that the fact that he never told anyone that he killed Diego’s brother should prove to him that he can trust him. Gonzalo continues to threaten him if he ever betrays him. Edelmiro continues to spy on them. Carolina is in bed when Alex comes to see her. She’s shocked to see him and asks him what he’s doing there. He tells her that he came to ask for her forgiveness because he knows that she never cheated on him with Macario. Diego lies in bed and thinks about Victoria. Someone knocks on the door and he says that if it’s Lucrecia he’s going to strangle her.
Edelmiro rushes in and tells him that he knows who killed his brother. Diego is shocked to learn that it was Gonzalo Montero. Edelmiro tells him how he found out. Gonzalo tells Macario that he has to get into the lawyer’s office and destroy the last will of Don Gregorio as Don G’s lawyer watches his videotaped will. On the tape, Don G leaves orders for Gonzalo to divorce Gladys by having a DNA test done on Alex which will prove to the courts that Gladys was unfaithful. He tells Gonzalo to throw Gladys out on the street; he’s not going to leave Gladys anything. The lawyer pauses the tape and thinks back to his meeting with Gladys that afternoon when she tried to seduce him as Gladys thinks about the night Don G confronted her with the knowledge that Alex wasn’t Gonzalo’s son. She hopes the lawyer will help her because if he doesn’t she’ll lose everything.
Maria visits Victoria and tries to lift her friends spirits. Victoria tells her that Macario confessed and that Isabela is pregnant. She asks Maria to talk to Carolina for her. Alex tells Carolina confessed that Don G ordered him to take her away from Alex. Carolina tells him that that’s the reason why he never wanted to kick Isabela out of the ranch--because he was still supporting her the whole time. She tells him that their relationship is now impossible because Isabela is expecting his child. He begs her to listen to him, but she tells him that his distrust in her ruined their relationship and her life. Christa makes fun of Isabela and Martina because they’ll soon face Renato’s wrath when he comes home. Renato comes home and finds the three of them there. Christa fixes him a drink and he turns his attentions to Isabela first, wanting to know why she didn’t tell him the truth about how far along she is in her pregnancy.
Alex tells Carolina that he’s not marrying Isabela and Carolina accuses him of not recognizing his responsibilities, but he tells her that he can’t marry Isabela because he doesn’t love her. He tells Carolina how much he loves her. Renato tells Isabela that she’ll have to wait a little longer for him to deal with her because he wants to handle Martina first. He tells Martina that he’ll give her one last opportunity to change her mind--she can be a part of his group or she can leave and never come back. Martina decides to stay. He gestures for her to go to his bedroom and begins stretch. He takes off his shirt and follows her into the bedrrom and leaves Christa and Isabela alone together. Isabela is teary-eyed when Christa tells her that Renato might try to make her lose her baby.
Carolina tells Alex that it doesn’t matter if he loves her or not because she could never marry him. She tells him that he should marry Isabela and recognize his child. He tells her that of course he’ll recognize his child as his own, but won’t marry Isabela just because she’s pregnant. He says he doesn’t want to have a marriage like his parents’ marriage and won’t marry someone he doesn’t love. He tells her again how much he loves her and loves her to much to marry someone else. They’re crying as he begs her to forgive him, telling her that he never stopped thinking of her. They kiss. Diego now understands why Don G wanted to buy his ranch--because he didn’t want Diego to be around to investigate and find out who really did kill his brother. Diego leaves angrily.
A moment later, he barges into Lucrecia’s room and tells her to call Gonzalo and invite him over. She wants to know why and thinks he only wants Gonzalo over because he’ll probably bring Victoria with him. Diego tells her to do what he told her to do and assures her that she’ll be very interested in what he has to say to Gonzalo. Victoria asks Maria to talk to Carolina for her and convince her to forgive Alex. Maria doesn’t think that anything she tells Carolina will change her mind. The conversation turns to Diego and Victoria tells her that she’s finally begun to realize that Diego isn’t who she thought he was and thinks that he’s only supporting Carolina because he wants to get his revenge on her (Victoria). Diego paces back and forth in his living room, remembering one of the instances in which Don G accused him of being a murderer. German tells Diego that Edelmiro told him what he found out and he’s worried about what Diego might do. Diego pulls out a gun and tells German that he’s going to make Gonzalo tell the police the truth and if he doesn’t, he’ll kill him.
Gonzalo and Macario agree that Macario will go and steal Don G’s latest will and destroy it and then look for the original will that named Gonzalo as heir. When he leaves, Macario says that he’ll use the original will (which he already has in his possession) to get even more money. Diego tells German how angry he is that Don G and Gonzalo knew that he was innocent, but still accused him of killing his own brother. German tries to make him see logic and asks him if he expects the police to believe Edelmiro if he can’t get Gonzalo to talk. Ruben yells at Constanza for not telling him earlier that Don G had substituted Patricio as executor of his estate. The phone rings as he continues to yell at her. He tells her that she deserves to be punished, but Constanza turns on him, telling him that she’s sick and tired of him. She tells him that she’s going to get a divorce. Upstairs, Gladys answers the telephone and Lucrecia tells her to tell Gonzalo to come over for dinner and that it’s very important that he do so. When they hang up, Gladys is certain that Gonzalo will try to take Victoria to the dinner. She is determined that she will be the one he takes with him to the dinner.
Alex and Carolina kiss and she pulls back to tell him that their kiss will be their last because they’ll never be able to be happy together. She tells him it’s over and asks him not to come looking for her again. He begs her not to leave, swearing that he loves her and wants to be with her. He tries to kiss her again, but she pulls away, telling him that she loves him to, but they can’t be together. He is hurt and asks why she can’t forgive him when he just told her a thousand times how sorry he is and how much he loves her. She tells him that maybe she is capable of forgiving him for trusting Macario instead of her, but she won’t let his child grow up without a father. He tells her that he’ll take care of his child, but she tells him that it doesn’t matter because it will mean that Isabela will forever be in their lives.
They’re both crying as she tells him to forget all about her. German convinces Diego to think about what he’s doing and Diego tells him that he’s right. German tells him that it’s best if Gonzalo doesn’t come over tonight. Diego agrees with him, but tells him that Lucrecia already called and invited him. Diego wonders what he’s going to say to Gonzalo now that he’s decided to hide what he knows until he can get some solid proof. Lucrecia comes downstairs, half-dressed for dinner and tells Diego that Gonzalo is coming over and might be bringing his fiancée with him. German leaves to find Maria and tell her to set a couple more places at the dinner table. Diego tells her that she mentioned Victoria just because she knew how much it hurts him to see her with Gonzalo. Lucrecia tells him that she feels the same way knowing that Diego loves Victoria and not her. Victoria and Maria worry about Carolina as Gonzalo and Gladys arrive at Diego’s ranch for dinner. Diego glares at Gonzalo as he remembers what Edelmiro told him about Gonzalo killing his brother.
Gonzalo tells them thanks for inviting him to dinner, but he objects to his date for tonight--Gladys. He insults her and says that he hopes their dinner won’t be a long one. Gladys and Lucrecia trade insults and when Gladys leaves, Lucrecia asks Gonzalo why he didn’t bring Victoria. Gonzalo says that bringing Gladys isn’t his fault and wasn’t able to prevent it. Diego and German wonder what Diego is going to do now that he’s decided not to confront Gonzalo immediately with the knowledge that he killed Diego’s brother. Gladys eavesdrops on their conversation and learns that Gonzalo killed Diego’s brother. Gladys realizes she’s sitting on a goldmine and plans to use the information to make sure that Gonzalo pays for everything he’s done to her. Diego wonders who else might know the truth and decides to go to the police and get the case opened. Gonzalo and Lucrecia wonder why Diego was so insistent that he come over for dinner.
Gladys walks back in the living room and says that it must be just a friendly dinner. Diego walks in and tells them that it’s not a friendly dinner and says that the reason he invited them was to talk about Alex. He tells them that Alex is upstairs speaking with Carolina this very moment and has been told the truth--that Macario tricked everyone into believing that Carolina cheated on Alex with him. Alex and Carolina argue over what he should do concerning Isabela and the baby. She reminds him how badly he treated her and how he didn’t trust her and hurt her. She tells him to leave and go back to Isabela. Isabela tells Christa that she doesn’t want to lose her baby and decides to leave so that Renato won’t make her lose it. Christa grabs her arm and tells her that she’s not going anywhere and makes her sit back down. At that moment, they hear Martina’s screams coming from the bedroom. Christa is amused and Isabela is afraid. Christa tells her that if she leaves, Renato will find her and beat her and make her lose her baby. Christa tells her that he might even take her life, too, just like he did the baby’s.
Renato finishes punishing Martina who is crying and afraid of him. He tells her that she’s suffered enough for the first time, but next time will be worse if she doesn’t do what he orders her to do. He tells her that she can go now. She lies on the bed, crying and asks him when he wants her to come back again. He makes fun of her by mimicking her crying and tells her to come back tomorrow so that they can go and see Samuel. He tells her that as soon as they get Victoria’s signature forged, they’re going directly to the bank to take all of her money. Maria asks Victoria what she plans to do if Carolina finds out the truth about who her mother is and tells her that it’s best if she and Carolina pack their things and move far away. Victoria tells her that they can’t leave because Carolina will only be happy at Alex’s side and says that she will just have to face the consequences when Florencia and Carolina find out the truth. Maria asks if she’ll be able to live with Carolina’s hatred and she says that she will--and if she has to go to prison, she’ll just have to go to prison. Florencia and Patricio wonder what Diego and Lucrecia know about her daughter. Flroencia vows that with or without Diego and Lucrecia’s help, she’s going to find her daughter. Carolina tells Alex to leave and to understand that they can never be together again. He asks her if she really wants him to leave and she tells him that her heart doesn’t want him to go, but her brain is telling her that he should. She tells him to go and assume his paternal responsibilities with Isabela’s child because they no longer have anything to talk about. He tells her that he wants her to know that he’ll never stop loving her. She tells him that he should have thought about how much he loved her before sleeping with Isabela. Without another word, he leaves her alone.
Gonzalo tells Gladys that he knows that she’s always supported Isabela, but Alex loves Carolina and she should tell Isabela to stay away from Alex. Renato tells Isabela that he’s thought about what type of punishment she deserves. He tells her that he thought about marking her face forever and tossing her out on the street, but has decided against that for the moment. He tells her that she will continue telling Alex that the baby is his and if she fails, he’ll make sure that her baby is never born. She promises that she’ll make sure Alex never finds out the truth. Diego tells Gonzalo that he invited him because he wants them to know that he loves Carolina as if she were his own daughter and if she decides to forgive Alex, he’ll fight for her and Alex’s love until the day he dies even though Alex is a Montero. Gonzalo tells him that that’s the one thing they agree upon.
Gonzalo suggests they leave their dinner for another time because he needs to talk to his future ex-wife alone. He tells Gladys that he and Victoria are going to be more than just spouses--they’ll be in-laws to each other’s child. Gladys tells him that Alex will marry Carolina over her dead body. He suggests she do just that--die. He says that her dying is a great idea and she should do so, telling her things would be easier because then he won’t have to get a divorce. At home, Bianca asks Constanza what’s going on. Constanza tells her that Ruben is angry because she told him that she’s getting a divorce. Bianca is thrilled at the news and insists that Constanza sleep in her room with her so that Ruben won’t beat her. She also tells her that she’s in love with Claudio. Diego goes to see an investigator and tells him that his brother died about five years ago and he was accused of the murder. The investigator asks why he wants the case reopened and Diego tells him that he now knows who killed his brother.
