If the AI does come up with a SoD that can punch through the defenses around one of your planets and wipe it out, it's not as immediately crippling. It's still something to be dealt with ASAP, as you can't afford to let the AIs slaughter worlds wholesale. But the danger of allowing even one world to be taken is much greater when you can count the number of systems you control on one hand.

Fortunately missile bases are relatively more potent on small maps as it's harder to assemble really huge SoDs, so this tends to make it a bit easier to defend every planet (except the ultra-poor ones, of course.)
