Vacuum gauge. basically you hook up the vacuum gauge to the intake manifold, the adjust the distributor to get the highest vacuum reading. You might have to adjust it abit if it pings under load, but that will get you a good starting setting, if it knocks, just retard it till the knock goes away and lock her down.
