Back in the 50's when I was little I remember riding in my Uncles 49 Plymouth out there in the Desert and we didn't have anything to cool off with if we rolled up the windows we'd pass out if we opened the windows we got really burnt from the wind how the car kept from over heating is beyond me but thank god it didn't. I do remember the canvis water bags hanging off the front for the car if it did boil over.
I'm guessing back in the day with these evaporators they would stop often at small general stores and buy ice to put in them it may not of lasted every long but I bit it felt good for the short time it worked before melting. I don't remember anyone haveing one back then. and Air conditioning was just about to arrive in the big fancy $$$$$ car's mid to late 50's and up. I think the first car I ever had with A/C wasn't tell around the late 70's.
