The aluminum is bolted to the pickup side rail and the canopy is bolted to the the aluminum that sticks out from the side rail. I used the same bolts for everthing but it is important you do not stick the sticky foam to truck rail because when you take canopy etc. off then your not stuck with this glue on the rail, it is stuck to aluminum and canopy base, but you need to put it on to stop rain from getting in that is if you live on the west or east Coast where it is wet but if you live in dry country I guess one does not need to worry.
If you look at my truck in the Glendale national meet you will see I have a trailer hitch carrier which helps me pack water, cooking gear etc. odds and ends, tools etc. I can pack upto 500 pounds on this thing and I managed to get a good buy on an Aluminum checker plate tool box which is bolted down so no one can just up and be gone with it. I drop the lid on this item and cook right there at the back of the truck my 3 meals a day and coffe break.
