Fun with Oil Pans (not the rear main seal

by Plym_46

So over a couple of sessions my brother and I addressed what I though was a rear main seal leak from my 259. After pulling the pan and checking this out it was evident that the leak was not from the rear main seal as the area where a leak might be was clean and dry. So it must have been a leak from the poi pan gasket. We did change the bottom half of the seal but left the upper half alone.

Put the new gaskets pieces in place, Doesn't any one make a modern neoprene piece for these engines?) and got everything reinstalled and torqued. Tomorrow I need to finih the reinstall of the starter, and put in some oil. The bottom of the pan had a bit of crud in it but no evidence of metal in the goo. The cylinder walls still show crosshatching pattern, and the ream main bearing showed a bit of wearing but nothing alarming.

So Hopefully I can get everything buttoned tomorrow and see if it will start and hold it's oil where it belongs.

Then if everything works out it off to DMV.
