The T86/T90 was used behind Studebaker V8s for many years and held up fine in everyday driving. When the 289" and drag racing combined, only then was it was found wanting.
The T85/T89 is still readily available and a much better, much stronger transmission. That is why Studebaker used it behind 289"s for the trucks. The T89 was my choice for my custom E12 and Packard V8.
