Pulling steering wheel

I need to pull my steering wheel (2R6. Won't budge so I plan to make some type of hand-made puller to do it. That threaded center shaft doesn't look all that sturdy... is it advisable to put the nut back on the shaft a few threads and press against the nut, or some other method?
