  • OUR TRUCK IS ALMOST DONE

    • Posted Nov 10, 2009 2:41 PM

Thanks folks for the compliments. It might be a long time before I can post a 3/4 shot as Coquitlam, BC and the surrounding area are now in our rainy season. The colours are Pimento green(Toyota) on the top and Emerald Green(Chrysler) with a vibrant green stripe for pinstripe.
After I posted this message yesterday Peter Sauer called me from Texas to tell everyone what I had done and to explain the hair loss. I think the hair loss was from my previous relationship but I was no easy guy to live with either. Okay so back to the truck. I am posting a picture of the way I bought the truck as well. It has a 28" Flaming River tilt column with an early Monte Carlo steering wheel and the truck horn button attached in the centre. Replacement floor pans were from Classic and my body man fabricated door bottoms, outer lower skins and a new inner fenders for th drivers side. The bumper was made from two original front bumpers cut apart then widened and welded smooth. The fibreglass tonneau cover is from Studebaker Rods & Customs Fort Wayne Indiana 260-482-1118. Tony has a mould for the 2R trucks at least the short box. I have kept the solid axle in the front and am using Nitrogen shocks and Delrin bushings from Chuck Collins athttp://www.studebakerparts.com/ I find the ride acceptable after removing some of the leaf springs. I think there was about 13 leafs per side when I started.
I have used Turner Disc Brakes on the front and my rear axle is from an Astro van with shortened housing and axles. The pumpkin is a 8.5". I know that most use a 9" Ford however this was a cheaper way for me to go and I wanted to retain the five inch on five stud wheel pattern.
There are other things that I have done like install a 60/40 bench seat(hi-seat backs) from a Ford Ranger but full size seats will fit too. I made my own seat mounts using the stock Studebaker sliders that were in some trucks.
The vents in the hood are from a 1979 Buick LeSabre and are functional. A lot of engine heat escapes out through these. I wish that I had researched the vent thing better as I am still looking for a better vent for the passenger side. I have Peter Sauer on his travels looking for at least one more but most cars of this vintage have been crushed. Might I suggest you use a Buick Allure(2009) that is if you wanted a vent that is.
Brian Curtis who writes for Turning Wheels will be doing a feature on this truck so I will elaborate more about the a/c(Old Air Products), the flip open rear window, power steering, hydro boost brakes with a combination valve and residual valves from www.mpbrakes.com/ and the machined plate adapting the Chevy 700R onto the back of my OHV six.
