      What about the old oil pump drive gear? you said that it rotated in the opposite direction? The oil pump should rotate clockwise (looking at the shaft end on the outside of the engine. The driven oil pump gear is on the left and the idler gear is on the right. the gears pull the oil form the lower side of the oil pump (from the crankcase pickup tube) around the outside of the pump to the top side to feed the oil galley. I can't imagine this being wrong because then the distributor would be rotating backwards and engine no runny.

      What about that threaded hole that you found?
