Stude work day
by Brian Dahl
Today I pulled the truck in the garage (well, part of it anyway) and greased the "Old Girl". May not have needed greasing right now, but I remember Ted telling me to keep her greased regular. Figured, what the heck, and it gives me the chance, again, to use my new Lincoln pneumatic grease gun. . The small pleasures in life. . Was a little down on the dip stick, so picked up a gallon of oil at NAPA, and topped it off. Then back under to check bolts for tightness (good thing to do from time to time), then off for "test drive". Truck handles and drives like a dream. . That was my day. Hope yours was as enjoyable.

I tor into my wife's Jetta. Replacing the wheel bearing, control arm bushings, strut, spring, brake disc, pads, and axle. Lost my 8mm 12 point star wrench and had to go to Napa for a new one. I thing the noise is coming from the tranny though... a while ago the car picked up some road debris - some plastic sheets that wrapped around the axle and toasted the tranny seal. I replaced the seal and topped off the fluid but I thing the damage was done...

Did you checked the drive shaft ?
They like to make some noise, look if there is a cut in the rubber sleeve around the bearings.
So the grease come out and dirt in the bearing and is often a reason for a broken bearing.

suspension components on the passenger side and the sound is gone so it's wasn't coming from transmission. I'll do the drivers side tomorrow. I had bought a fully assembled strut, brake pads and rotor a couple years ago knowing I would need to replace these in the future. The reason I doing this now is that at the last inspection they said the suspension arm bushings were shot which they were. So I threw in the wheel bearing and complete axle w/CV joints & boots. I only need these two TDIs (97 Passat & 98 Jetta) to last 5 years or so when we move to OR as I don't plan to ship them out there. The Jetta has 260,000 miles on it and the Passat has only 130,000 miles.

Hey All,
This isn't necessarily truck related, but I recently acquired a 61 Hawk with a 289-4V.
The car originally had a 3 speed overdrive transmission, but someone has replaced it with a staright 3 speed. I would like to find find the correct transmission with overdrive to reinstall.
I am in northern NY, but also travel to Tennessee, southern Indiana, and SE Missouri, sometimes southern Iowa.
I believe the transmission is a Borg Warner T86, and it is the later style with the long tailshaft and single piece driveshaft. From what info I can find, there does not seem to be any variations. I have no idea if the same transmission was used in trucks.
Would any of you have a transmission that you would part with for a reasonable price?
Posted on Sep 24, 2012, 1:15 PM from IP address 71.240.254.120
FWIW, I used to buy and sell complete transmissions for $25 all day long. Then, it went to $50, and then $100. Today, vendors want $200 for the overdrive solenoid.

Brian, if you are talking about my truck, it's waiting in the barn of a new heart
Just send a mail to Ted, he got a short block in work for me.
Hope I get it done before the first snow comes over Germany
I have winter tires on my 2R11, so I can drive it in the winter....
here are the latest pictures
Have fun

Yes, I understancd what you say about having the winter tires on! Went thru MANY winters over there, and they can be brutal! Hope that heater works well enough to keep you warm, but then again just having the truck out on the road will keep you warm I am sure.
You definately went to the right person for engine work. Ted did wonders on my truck, from motor to transmission to brakes and on and on. He knows his stuff!
Thank you for the photo's. They were great.

Today Lee W. and Bob Cruse stopped by Dads place on their way from Seattle to the Sacremento area. They had a sweet looking 2R16 on a trailer headed South. Of course I didn't get a picture, but they did. Hopefully, they will be able to post it soon. Thank you guys for stopping! I feel priveledged that you took time out of your long drive to stop in and say hi. I hope I did not talk your ear off! I don't get to talk to fellow Stude truck lovers very often!

John, I see you are coming out to Oregon for vacation. I can't remember where your place was located, but I would love to meet up with you if possible. I am in the Salem area. What dates were you coming?

Hi RIck just to let you know that we are in Kingman at the Walmart tonight. Monday AM I will be looking into somewhere to get a reverse flush done on my rad/motor to clean out the old crap and install new crap which I hope will help us from boiling over. I now have a good working fail safe Rad Cap on Board so that is helping so far but the old one imploded at Furnace Creek in Death Valley along with our starter. Thankfully it is cooler here and I'm hoping for a cooler night4 as we do not have power so AC cannot work. Looks like we will be heading for the old ROute 66 trail to Seligeman tomorrow, WIlliams and Flagstaff then push on north to Monument4 Valley do a drive by there and head for Moab & the Arches. I sure hope when we get up there it is even cooler than here, Judy checked the listings for tomorrow, Mesa 99*F, Flagstaff 73*F for highs so I know I will not be going further south.
If your in the area drop in.

I'm sorry I missed seeing them. I hope he got his truck fixed and doesn't have any more problems with it.
By the way, I installed AdBlock Plus and it seems to be doing a great job. Thanks for that tip. I also installed Do Not Track Plus last week and I really love it.http://www.abine.com/dntdetail.php?

On my 62 Champ i am installing rear spring bushings
when the bushing is in, one end is flush to the spring eye
the other end sticks out about 1/4 to 3/8 inch is this normal. The
old bushings were all worn out so i couldnt see if they
stuck out some.

Lenny: the ourside metal part of the bushing should be even on both sides. I had a similar problem the first time installing them. Then I took a 2x4 and laid the spring eyelet on the board and used another block on the bushing. The two boards absorbed the movement of the inside metal and allowed the outside of the bushing to be driven in flush.

Thanks Ted
My bushings are just a little to long on the outer bushing there is a little
flange so it wont go in any more. What is sticking out is the inner
sleave so i will have to cut both ends so they are flush to the spring
eye.
Posted on Sep 24, 2012, 6:31 PM from IP address 76.17.73.184
Lenny. The inner sleeve will stick out. It is wide likt that so the inner sleeve will contact the shackle when the bolts are tightened. You will be dissapointed if you cut it flush.

Besides completing the building of the stakes for my stake bed, I need to re-arch the springs. I bought a 25 ton press from HF. I have new bushings and slippery stuff that goes between the leaves. My plan is to remove the springs, take them apart, and re-arch them one at a time. I'll start with the longest leaf and bend it just a little every 2" and them go over it again in between the 2" spots. Subsequent leafs will be made to match that arch. I'll measure the before arch and compare that dimension to the after measurement. I think the key is to go slow and only bend a little at a time. I'm thinking that I'll add 2" to the spring when completed. Anybody know the usual sag rate? 2" per 60 years?

Is anybody else having trouble loading pages on the Forum? Sometimes it takes forever to get the page after clicking on it. Other times it comes up right away. I don't think it's my computer as this is the only place that has the problem. Is the site running short of bandwidth when it gets busy?
I'm not to familiar with this sites system but it appears that it is hosted by Network54. Looks like they host for many sites...
Software is probably so old that there is no support let along and updates. Would be nice if someone with the where with all could donate the H/W, S/W, time and knowledge to get STT onto a new and friendly system... A system like SDC has would be nice but it uses a similar method to display pictures (user supplies a URL to the picture).
With the slow site and the end of the month advertisements maybe it's time to update the whole site. If I knew how to do it, I would gladly volunteer. There's a great bunch of guys and gals here and perhaps one of them is also a computer guru who could tackle it. Or maybe the person in charge could fix this site. Ideas, anyone?
Seems that it owuld be good to get the Stude family all in one place? Could 'Trucks' just be a sub forumn on the SDC site? solves two problems - updates the forumn software and a dedicated site

get hurt, let's bring some of the newer folks, who use this venue, up-to-date on the origin of STT. First off, this site was created by, paid for by, and maintained by a true STUDEBAERE truck nut. He created this site years ago before most people knew what a Studebaker truck was or there was any value to owning a Studebaker truck. All the attention was on the cars- bullet-noses, Hawks, GTs, R-number, etc. The SDC site wasn't particularly attuned to meeting the needs of truck nuts. So one man took on the project himself over a decade ago and has never charged anyone to use his site. It's been free and no membership is demanded. He has not come to us pleading for $$$ to maintain, to expand the site or to turn it into a cash cow for himself. He has done it on his own and I, for one, appreciate his efforts. Thank you, Tony Olkowski!!
I hope I have brought this matter to the users in an accurate perspective. If not, I'm sure someone will add their thoughts.
But, I, as many of you, are becoming frustrated with the problems we're experiencing. I feel an upgrade is in order, but its going to cost $$$. I do not know if Tony is in a position to finance an overhaul or to create a totally new program. Since this is HIS program, he will have to determine how to meet the perceived needs of a large group of users. I'm sure Tony is aware that there is some dissatisfaction and I slao know he is aware of what is being stated about his site.
Tony, we don't want to lose STT. It's the one site I use every day. If you need help with the site, need funds to create a aite that meet the neeeds of this large group, please help by joining us in a discussion.

as to the origin of this site, and the effort of one man to establish a site dedicated to our hobby, passion or whatever you call it. I am positive there is a great sense of appreciation from everyone for what has been done by Tony. If changes do need to be done to improve the site, and I'm sure, again, everyone agrees it does, then I second a discussion. Anything to resolve the monthly adds, pop ups,and slow operation would be great!
Thank you for informing us.

Thank you Frank, for reminding us that we do owe a debt of gratitude to Tony O. for building and maintaining this site. I was certainly glad to find it when I bought my 2R15 and I wouldn't want to be without some form of trucks only forum. But, as Frank in Germany pointed out recently, there are now 474 truck farmers. I think there were only a little over 200 when I started coming here. I would be willing to donate some money to help Tony improve the capacity of the site if he's willing to do it.
So Tony, please give us your thoughts on what can be done.
this is something special and we don't want to loose it. I like it because it is NOT a car site but trucks only. Of course a sub forum on SDC would be trucks only also...
And again slow and clunky is more like my old M15A with the T9...

I'm on here pretty much daily, and this day ( 23rd) was the only one in recent memory where the site was unbearably slow. I for one think we have a good thing right here. The SDC site has a tendency to get pretty testy at times and I'm not sure going there is such a good idea; I like the idea of being somewhere else that's off the beaten path. Perhaps we need to pass the hat again to upgrade the technology. We DO have a great site with good info and guys who talk trucks, not politics, etc.

And I am also an almost daily user. As far as "jumping the gun" goes, when something can be made better, then people should speak out. Near the end of each month, as you know, there are problems with the site (slow running, etc.). If this can be corrected, I say it should, for everyone's sake. If that end requires a donation with expense, so be it. Like you, I would also be willing to help out. Not knowing much about the SDC site, I would have to reserve my opinion on moving there.
I like this site, I enjoy the fine people here and I would like it to continue with improved operation.
It would be great for Tony O. to let us know his thoughts on all this.

I could never have built my Studebaker truck here in Ohio without this site. The advice, the search, the williness of everyone to help, all made this site the place to be. Tonight , the speed picked up. I would hate to lose all the info that is on this site and also the great group of people that are on this site! THANKS TONY !!!!!!

A couple of years ago someone heard that Tony needed some money to extend the band width and prevent the ads from appearing so early in the month. The site was created for a few hundred visits and as the group grew the visits increased. When the rest of us heard about the need for some dollars to be invested in our favorite site there was a plea sent to Tony for his address. Not sure how many people contributed but it must have been enough to encourage Tony to improve the site. Perhaps it is time for Tony to post his address again so we can send him some money.
Frank in Germany says he has something like 437 members to the Studebaker truck farmers family and it is likely many more than that log on here every day.
Tony O: Post your address information again for us and we will likely help keep this a modern fast, usable, friendly place to visit.
PS. Vern I hope you did not read that I believed the gear was rotten! Ted

Yesterday the 23rd. the site was slow responding (again) and much discussion was presented, with a general opinion of "what can we do to help". We love this site, that is evident. Normally the site slows down near the end of the month (along with the annoying pop ups), and it goes back to normal around the first of the next month. Today is the 24th., and BINGO it's back to normal again! Did WE, as members of this site have anything to do with the site going back to normal operation "early"?
I wonder.
Tony O., we all thank you for this site, and I am sure our collective offer to help, if needed, stands.

My recollection of the early days of STT is the same as Frank's. And as Ted J. noted, we've been asked once or twice a decade for contributions, though this has always remained a low-buck operation. I'm no software guru, but as I recall, the cost to upgrade the site to a truly modern operation a few years ago would have been prohibitive, given our relatively small population and CASO tendencies. As a result, Tony O decided to stay with Network 54 and just upgrade on the cheap.
I can't speak for the SDC board of directors, but I suspect that the chances of establishing a separate Stude truck board on the SDC Forum are remote. Given our small population, we're less likely to qualify for separate treatment than Avantis or customs/modifieds. Our trucks (like Avantis) share many mechanical components with other Stude vehicles, and the SDC board prefers not to Balkanize the Stude community any more than necessary. In any case, since it would cost money, the decision would have to be made by the SDC board. It would not be up to the webmaster.

Yes this site does get slow sometimes. But I think is is with my bandwith not the STT sites bandwith. OH those adds are a pain.. so I took Franks advice and added the ad blocker. there is one for google chrome too. and it is free. as for moving too Studebaker fourm, there is already a disscustion page for trucks but none hardy uses it, I havent bent there in so long that I forgotmy password and cant get into the fourm anymore. that another reasion I like it here. I also like the way all the measages are fromated. there are much easyer to follow here.

Night time is the best time to visit this site as the traffic is way slower then. I've never had a slowdown then either. During daylight hours it runs anywhere from no problems to timing out because I can't connect to the server. I think there would be a lot of happy truckers if we could get more bandwidth. As several of us have said, we are more than willing to donate some money to Tony to speed things up and keep this site going strong.
WOW This is weird , this site is probably one of the fastest I log onto. I have NetZero tin can and string.
I have a lot of websites that take for ever or just won't log on at all. But if they all were as fast as this one I'd be one happy camper. So to hear people say their having problems here just blows me away.

Thank you to John Weinrich and his wife Sue for a fine dinner on the way home Friday afternoon, from FDoP. It was great to convoy with your M15 for an overnight stay at our place, and a return convoy back to FDoP on Saturday morning. We sure turned more than one head with our trucks, and both sounding off with our BULL HORNS was amazing!
Thank you to Jim Beadle, for showing up each day with a different vehicle to show! Your Monte Carlo was awesome, and it should be noted you displayed Studebaker TURNING WHEELS in the trunk. Your '53 2R is definately a beauty, and you did draw the crowds with it! I also appreciate you offering me your copies of TURNING WHEELS to take home and look over.
Thank you to Frank Drumheller for sharing your early experiences with Studebakers, and for all the information you have provided me on this site. It was great to meet you in person. Looks like you are doing real well. . Also very nice to meet your friend.
Thank you to Gary Hern, not only for your displays, but for the bags of peanuts you offered from your thrashing operation. In addition, you provided a location for all of us to meet on Saturday, and "talk Studes". Nice to meet you in person.
Thank you to George O for bringing two awesome Studes to display! Your Scotsman on the flatbed Stude Diesel was a sight to see. You even offered me to fire up the diesel and take it for a spin, an offer I HAD to refuse--I would not take a chance on putting a scratch on that beautiful rig! LOL. (By the way, reminder to check for your wallet before you leave home! ). Great to meet you also.
Thank you to (Martin??) and your wife, from Bedford, VA, who took the time to come by and introduce yourselves, and show photos of that fine Stude you have. Welcome aboard.
Last but not least, I must thank someone who was not there at this event. Thank you Ted Jensen for putting my 3E14 in the condition it is in to be able to participate with these other fine people at the FDoP event. I could not have done this without your upgrades to my truck. During Friday and Saturday, my wife and I drove the truck a total of 159 miles. I averaged 11.30 miles per gallon. The truck now has 37,957 actual miles on it.
In hopes I have not missed anyone, but if I have, on behalf of my wife and I, I just want to say THANK YOU for a wonderful time.

have said it better! We had a great time! My wife and I drove all the way from Woodbridge VA to the FDotP, about 80 miles on RT1, 45-50 MPH. After the day at FDotP we then then drove to Brian's home which was about 40 miles. Brian was so gracious to put us up for the night, thank you Brian and Joan! The next day, Saturday, we drove back to the FDotP to spend the day there and meetup with all the STF members. Had the pleasure to faces to the names on STF and more! Later Saturday the wife and I packed up headed home to Woodbridge. We put a total of 272.9 miles on the old M15A.

For making my wife Lisa and I feel so comfortable & welcome, being the new guys & showing up at the last minute!!!
It was great to put names & faces together with posts I've read on STT. I had a couple Stude trucks back in the 80's, so it's great to be back in such great company!
Looking forward to the future!

You will find what I have found: folks on this site and Stude Truck Farmers are a great bunch of people. They are always helpful, insightful, and generous. Once in a blue moon you might run into a grump but it probably is just because of a lack of coffee... Everybody is different but most want to share their experience and learn about others experiences. Always great to see pictures - that is why I have offered anyone to send me pictures to post if their are having problems or can't post for some reason... Just email me pictures and I can post them via my blog or directly here using dropbox.

Would the young man who introduced himself and his wife ( he was from the Bedford, VA area) to me at the Field Days event, please identify yourself again? We want to identify everyone who posed for our group photo, and I must apologize, your name has slipped my mind.
Thanks (and by the way a fine looking Stude you have there!)

the better memory here, George. Dan and Lisa Martin.
I certainly am glad I got to meet all of you. It was a great day and a great crowd. I made it OK, but I had to let Gerald do the driving back to Louisa. Overall, a fantastic day and great Studebaker trucks.
I hope to see you at the Greater Virginia Chapter's gathering at Chester & Nancy Bradfields home in Bridgewater, VA on Sunday, October 14th beginning at 1:00 PM. For those using a GPS the address is 9219 Centerville Road, Bridgewater, VA. I can guarantee a memorable event in your Studebaker life.
God bless everyone of you. Frank

Although I don't usually attend car shows, I had to make an exception yesterday. At Fort Lee (VA) a car club was holding a "Cruise On The Fort" to benefit the childrens ward at the local Veterans Hospital.
My wife and I pulled up to the registration booth in my 3E14, and caused quite a commotion! They first of all were unaware Studebaker even made pickup trucks (I hear that a lot), and next, WHERE (or what class) to put me! Finally, it was decided I would be in the "Orphan" class, as they called it. That included one of a kind vehicles (for some reason, they also included Military vehicles in this). It was a great day! Had MANY comments about the truck, and a lot of people took photo's, some I even let sit in the truck to take. About 200 vehicles there of all makes and types. When the trophy's came around, a WWII era Jeep won the "Orphan Class", but that's definately OK! This was not about trophy's, for me, this was about supporting the Veterans Hospital.
I had forwarded photo's to John, asking him to post for me, here. When he does, please note the Camaro with the Viet Nam photo's air brushed on it. The guy that owned this car was over there the same time I was. He was with "Black Ops", and in addition to being held a POW for 10 days until he escaped, he was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, Two Bronze Stars, One Silver Star and many other awards and decorations. He dedicated this car to those who did not come back. Quite a guy!
The day did not end at the car show. Being my birthday, my daughters and their families held a very nice birthday party for me at my older daughter's home. Imagine my surprise when they gave me a large circular "Studebaker Authorized Service" sign for my garage!!! Made my day!

Great to meet each of you. Sorry we didn't get there until after 1pm, but I enjoyed my time talking to you guys & look forward to getting to know you better in the future.
Seeing the Studebaker trucks driven to the event gave me renewed energy to get my 58 3E7-12 completed and ready for the street !
Thanks All,

I was sitting down with George O. yesterday, and asked about where to acquire a STF shirt. George told me to give you a holler, and see if they are available (Size XL in polo and tee). Appreciate any info on this.
Thanks,

Eventually, there is more than 1 Malcolm on this forum. What's the chance of that? Yes, I'm Malcolm Berry and I do have a limited number of STF shirts. I do have an X large T and an X large polo for Brian. They are $11.00 for T's and $19.00 for polos, plus shipping. Phil Harris/Fairborn Studebaker usually ships them for me. If you will send me your mailing address, I'll let you know what the shipping cost is.You can contact me off forum or call me at (937-434-8494).

Put it in the trans hole this morning and tighten down the retainer and started out to the Field Day event. SpeedO seemed to be reading about correct. After about 20 miles the SpeedO stopped working. Before I left the Show I pulled the gear out of the trans and all but 2 of the teeth was striped off. Could this have been caused by something locking up in the trans?? Any way of checking this without opening up the trans. 3 speed with O/D? I will mail your payment on Monday. Thanks Again Jim Beadle
Posted on Sep 22, 2012, 6:50 PM from IP address 184.0.214.1
Jim: If the gears are stripped there are a couple of things that could be wrong.
First the speed-o cable stopped turning
Second and probably is the ring gear and pinion were not matched. Don't remember the pinion number you were asking for but it did not likely line up with the ring gear on the transmission. If that is the case befor making any more changes it would be best to identify the tire size you have and differential gear ratio, then check the parts book for the proper ring gear and pinion.
It is also possible the gear was just rotten. that happens though what you discribes isn't a rotten gear.
Posted on Sep 22, 2012, 10:39 PM from IP address 24.191.30.80
not sure what would be problem, gear was not rotten, could be worm gear inside not matching, should be ok if not been changed, I have two more gears with the same number if you want,

Ted thanks for your input. The gear that was in it before was for the regular 3 speed (14) teeth. The one that I got from Vern was the same except it had 17 teeth, the # in the Stude Intentional catalog says it is for 47-57 Champion with 4:56 gears The parts book says mine should be 18 tooth pinion. 53 2R5-12 with 3sp o/d 4:82 rear 215 75/R15 tires. Should all be same except for the # of teeth???
Vern I may want to get another one from you but I need to check out the situation before we do that. By there way there were still 2 teeth left on the gear that was not damaged???? THANKS Jim B.

Trying again........anybody out there got a solid lead on where I can find a straight 2R series rear bumper? I know they are hard to find, and I've been trying anyway. My best leads have been from you guys, so if you have a suggestion please advise. I've probably sent out 30 emails to restoration shops and parts houses, to no avail so far. Vern is looking for me as we speak. Thanks, Mike.

Ideas pop into ones head at times for no particular reason. Has anyone else ever thought about what they could do with an M5 needing front fenders, hood, grill. For something different, if not too odd, maybe a scaled down US6 front end? I think this would be pretty easy for a sheet metal man to bend up. No compound curves, right? Big tires, maybe a caravan top on the bed?

Dwain, this is not a Stude but a friend of mine just finished his three year project of his old GMC. I think it was a Duece and a Half originally and he put it on a newer Chevy Chassis. He just got this award at a local car show. He did all the work himself. He fabricated everything behind the cab from scratch. Yes the bed does taper down toward the back. The picture makes it look a little odd, like it was bent in the middle.

I have to say, that might be a first. But also have to says it is a great looking truck. I like the big front fenders with the big wheels and tires. Looks great like that. I have had in my head to do a short bed heavy duty looking truck myself. Nice to see an example. Besides the wheels and tires, did you do anything to the chassis? What wheels and tires are you running?
Not sure about those hub caps though.

The parts came off 2R donors. The front tires are P225-75-R16 which came with the truck and the rears are LT 235-85-R16 which I bought already mounted on Dodge rims. The truck had 16" trailer rims which are not legal here,so I bought Ford rims for the front.
The trucks original WB was 122" but was cut down to 112" by the fabricator who mounted the sevice box for Bell Telephone.
I am working on the hub cap issue.
The original front sheet metal was banged up.
Thanks,

that could solve a lot of problems for finding tires and some body that can mount them, size wise, you only lose an inch in height of tire, from 7.5 x17 to 7.5 x 16, 235x85x16 would be real close.

300 each sounds like a lot but being a collision shop owner and seeing wheels in the 800 range for a Lexus and 500 for a regular car I think they are a bargain. I will have them powder coated as well so they should look good for a long time.

Today, first day of Field Days, and believe a good time was held by all. John Weinrich, Jim Beadle, Gary Hern and me to name a few (some with wives along). Looking forward to meeting Frank Drumheller tomorrow and possibably George O if he shows up.
LOTS of antique cars and trucks, but think we counted three Stude's, including Gary Hern's fire truck, John's M15 and my 3E14. Back bright and early tomorrow. Should be a BIG day at Field Days!

You missed the two Studebaker buggies I had up the hill next to the Ruffin truck. The owner of the property used to have a M-5 pickup, I think it is in one of the sheds behind his house.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.

John even took a photo of me with the yellow one. How could I forget the buggies? We sure had a great time yesterday, and we're looking for the same today. Tractor pulls start at 10:0 am, and don't want to miss that. About 35 miles from FDoP for us, so will head out around 8. John W. and his wife accepted our invitation to stay with us last night, and we enjoyed a nice meal on the way home at a 50's themed diner. the two Stude's got a lot of "thumbs up" on the trip!
This morning we'll fire up the M15 and 3E14, and start our Stude Convoy, back to Field Days. Looking forward to lunching with Gary, and all the other Truck Farmers at 12:30, at Gary's peanut thrashing demonstration.
We're taking photo's, they'll be posted later.

OK here's the stupid question...
Does anyone have a CLUE where I might find the left and right sections of an M series grille that's in pretty decent shape..??
My grilles I have (from a one ton) and in good shape, but now as I start test fitting things back together I find out the grilles from the 1/2 ton and the 1 ton are made different.. Never knew that until a short while back.
I always thought they were made the same...
SO... anyone have any ideas where to start.
Or even an idea of what they'd cost??
Posted on Sep 21, 2012, 8:48 AM from IP address 108.209.204.34
I'll be replacing my stock grill ( its in pretty, to very good shape ), with a stand alone stainless grill I'll be building, then I will have both the side panels for sale ( not sure if I'd need any of the center one or not, but I will be fabbing up a new roll pan for the bottom, to go along with the new grill )
since you're asking, I assume you need one now, but late next spring / early summer I should be able to part with my stock grill, if you could wait that long

Anyone buy a C-cab rubber kit? Did your door seals fit?
by
A couple of years ago I bought a complete C-cab rubber kit from the guy who makes all the rubber for the other vendors.
Today when we began to install it, the door seal rubber didn't even come close to filling the space between the door and the cab. It needed to be twice as thick as it was.
Anyone else have the same problem?

I have the same problem with my C-cab but the reason is that I made a mistake.
I've installed it the wrong way, perhaps you've made the same mistake.
Sorry, I have no picture of it but maybe this will help
Re: Anyone buy a C-cab rubber kit? Did your door seals fit?

Jack, the weatherstrip that goes around the doors is not very think and most likely wont seal very well around the door.
I have it on my doors and I had a lot of wind noise around the doors. Some day I plan to take my doors off and redo my hinges when I do that I will probably put some weatherstrip like this on them.http://www.jegs.com/i/SoffSeal/854/E1723/10002/-1
For right now what I have done is put some self adhesive weather strip that I got at Home Depot on the inside of the lip in the cab opening. This way I have rubber against rubber it helped a lot.

First time I restored my truck, I bought some generic Steel Rubber door seal from a local upholstery shop. It was about 1/2" thick and required the door to be shut firmly.
I'm hoping the same profile is available in 3/8" thick and should be perfect.
Once again, the door seal rubber in the kit would have to be at least twice as thick as it is to begin to keep out the wind and rain.

Let us know what finally works. My doors couldn't seal on a great day when fully adjusted. I think Studebaker engineers stuck their heads in the sand on this one.

Just thought I would throw this out there-after getting sick of looking at those rusty 16 inch split rims on my 1ton I had new wheels made up. They are 16 tubeless. They were made for me by Stockton wheel in California. I can send a photo to anyone interested in seeing them-They are very nice.A little pricy but well worth it in the long run.

Funny I have 2 one tons and have the remains of a 4x4 dual wheel one ton-all have 750-16 wheels and tires. My diesel is original for a fact but the other 2 I do not know, you never know w/old trucks I guess.

The door hinges on our trucks are a well-known area for wear. Over the years, I accumulated a few spare hinges for the day when I was ready to restore my 3R6. That day has arrived, so I'm trying to pick the best hinges to use. I marked those I removed myself as to which side they fit, but I also bought a couple without any markings at all. To state it simply, the upper hinges appear to be identical, even though the parts book shows different numbers for all four hinges. The bottom ones have a 90-degree flange that bolts to the running board step, so they can be identified, left and right. But as shown in Zane's pictures, the uppers appear to be identical:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/23885/message/1347334308/Finally+my+hinges+are+done%21
(Nice job, Zane, BTW!)
Note that the two sets of three holes in the doors are reversed L and R. One door has two holes next to each other and a third ABOVE for each hinge. The other door has the single hole BELOW the two that are side-by-side. The only reason I can think of to have built the doors that way was so that the same hinge could be used for the top of both doors. But the parts book says they're not . . . . .
Posted on Sep 20, 2012, 5:49 PM from IP address 98.231.201.114
Skip, when I made the jig for drilling these out, I took everything apart and initially kept everything together as they came apart. After putting the jigs together and fitting the hinges, I found no difference in the hinge pin holes side to side. Even though there is a definite left and right on the bottom hinge, the hinge pin is in the same place from the edge of the hinge where I gauged the jig off of. Therefore, I only needed to make two jigs, one for the upper and one for the lower.
I cannot physically see any difference in the upper hinges side to side. I have as yet to install them, so, I may find something out later, but I don't know what it could be.
There are also different part numbers for the rear engine mounts on a V8 in my 59. I cannot see any differece in them either. There must be a reason for it though. Anyone out there have any comments?
Posted on Sep 21, 2012, 12:34 AM from IP address 71.237.154.170
I have bolted up the "wrong" upper hinges to both sides of the cab and they seem to fit fine. However, I have not tried to hang the doors off them. It's possible that there's a slight difference in the angle that would make them not match up with the holes in the door.

I was curious if anyone had purchased the M series ClassGlass fenders.
NO fenders to be found I can use, so I am going to have to go that route it seems.
I was curious how they were made. What kind of shape they came in, I'm guessing they need some dress up work. I was curious how much.
Also how strong is the lip where the fender mounted to the chassis; do the holes come pre-drilled,...
If they don't come pre-drilled I'll need to find out where all the mounting holes should be drilled in the truck bed.
Oh and how satisfied were you with them overall.... did anyone have any issues??
THANKS

I'm sure some of our guys that modified their trucks used some of these. I forgot who. I hope someone that has some info posts soon.
Maybe over the weekend, something will pop up?

I purchased 4 fenders and a set of running boards from Class Glass in 2006.
The running boards were very good. However, I did add a plate under them to stiffen them a bit.
The fenders did require some work. In general, the quality was good but for the price I had expected better. The inside flange seemed weak, so I added additional fiberglass on the inside. No holes are drilled, but no problem since I had parts of the original fenders for templates. There were some pits that required filling.
If I needed fenders, I would buy from them again. Just be prepared to do some work.
They look great on the truck.

Thanks for the info..
I was just curious.. always like to ask a few question before jumping in and buying something -- especially when there are so many knowledgeable and helpful folks here
I got a guy doing body work on my try now, so I'm sure it'll be no problem dressing up the fenders a little.
Also thanks for the info about the strength of the fenders.
I was thinking about adding some fiber glass, and also maybe making a few metal strips (2 - 3 inches long each) to put between the fender and the mounting nuts to give added support and also for a longer distance.
Never know when some idiot might just walk over and lean on your fender and snap it off.
Thanks again.
Oh I was curious. I know they only make 1/2 ton style fenders. Did you mke your trcu back original... or did you make a street rod type truck out of it...
The reason I am asking is I was curious about what size tire / rims you (or anyone) has, did they have to get the two inch extra wide fenders for clearance, etc.

Since my truck is on a 1/2 ton Chevy chassis, track is wider,so I bought 4 glass fenders 2 inch wider from Ben Ordas ,whom I hear nothing about anymore. I was pleased with my fenders and had no bracing to do. Email if you want any info. I have pictures as bought and as ran.

I have a 259 engine that has a knock sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine. I pulled the engine back out checked all bearings for tolerance all good. Checked crankshaft end play and adjusted. Put the motor back in my truck and still have the knock.
Any suggestions? The motor has been overhauled.
Thanks
Bill
Posted on Sep 20, 2012, 8:17 AM from IP address 76.253.184.239
Bill: there are two things to check right away. First when you overhauled the engine did you install an Aluminum timming gear on the Camshaft. If so this could be your noise. These gears make a lot of noise especially if you have new valve springs.
The second thing to check is your fuel pump. If there is a lot of play in the fuel pump action it will make a foul sounding noise.
If you know the damper is tight and the fuel pump cam on the end of the camshaft is tight there is not much left to check.

Had the opportunity to visit the Lemay car collection at Marymont and America's Car Museum in Tacoma. Well worth the money and they're within a short drive of each other. Harold LeMay amassed a collection of over three thousand vehicles in his lifetime. Don't plan on viewing both collections in the same day unless you're extremely fit.
