advice for you

by DO MS IV (no login)

I'm a fourth year DO student. I introduce myself to patients as a medical student. Attending DOs and MDs introduce me as a medical student or a student physician. Nurses and medical assistants introduce me as a medical student. At times, a curious talkative person may ask me what school I attend, and I would tell them. No one ever asked me what the word "osteopathic" means. Afterall, medical school is medical school, isn't it?. The good thing about a DO school is that its graduates can go into any specialty they want, be it internal medicine, ortho surgery, radiology, nephro, gastro, ENT, ophthalmology, cardio, critical care med, gastroentero, heme/onc, geriatrics, family med, dermatology, general sugery, ER med, cardiothoracic surgery, proctology, urology, pulmonology, ob/gyn, ped, etc. just to name a few off the top of my head. In short you can care for the entire body, short of doing dental surgery. You can certainly take care of the foot if you choose to do so. In contrast podiatry offers its students nothing but basically two choices: podiatric medicine which encompasses toenail clipping and bunionectomy, and if you're lucky, you might get to do a PSR which allows you to do foot surgery below the ankles many certain states. Aside from that, no one but podiatrists think of themselves anything more than podiatrists. I know misery loves company but please don't blast my profession with your contrite propaganda to make yourselves look or feel better. You never know whom you might need to grovel at for patient referral or for staff privileges at a local hospital. It might just be your friendly neighborhood DO.
