Dannielleby (no login)Podiatry is can be a very rewarding career. With your experience (education) in business you definately could make your mark in podiatric medicine. The main problem with podiarty and the doctors practicing it is their sense of business skills and how they may market themselves. The key to any type of medicine is how you sell yourself. Now people think that podiatry school is easy to get into which it is but it matters what type of dedication is applied at the institution. You need atleast a 24-month surgical residency to be trained adequately in physical and surgical medicine. The problem with foreign medical schools is the states limitations on the validity of the degree granted. Your MD may be accepted only in a certain amount of states and residency placement can be much more difficult. Being a MD has its rewards and tends to be a more financially secure route. Podiatric medicine with hard work and the right attitude (none like the 7 disgruntled frequent posters here)you can have a very stable life and medically rewarding life. You will hear alot of negative comments about the profession from DPMs that didnt have the will to make it. I graduated from OCPM 6 years ago, applied to residency and got a one year PPMR. I then re-applied and matched with a psr-24 at kaiser (2 year surgical res) I have been in solo practice for about 3 years now and I have been very sucessful through marketing and advertising. I am on staff at 3 hospitals and recieve maybe 2-5 ER calls a month. I have a 7400 ft2 home and drive a 2001 Lexus 470. I make plenty (203 K NET) but only did so from hard work and treating my patients and colleagues well. Once, again I would advise you to go through what you think fits you best but from hard work, dedication, and a good business sense you can fit right in to the mainstream of medicine. Dont be discouraged from the posting here. This is a gathering for the ones who lack what I mentioned. Keep us posted on your decision.
