Dentistry has a protected scope of practice, podiatry doesn't.

In my area, dentists perform various tooth treatments (MDs & RNs don't); specialize to do jaw surgery (that orthopods don't); or specialize in orthodontics (that MDs or RNs don't do). Meanwhile in podiatry, I have to compete with orthopods, MDs, RNs and anybody who calls themselves a "foot specialist" can perform basic foot care treatments (legally) for a fee. Also, there are sports stores selling custom made orthotics using a computerized foot scanning system. The orthotic lab has a DPM on staff to insure that the orthotics are made "properly" this enables the buyer to get extended insurance coverage for his or her orthotics that were custom made to that the data that was collected with a foot scanning system. When I complain to the podiatry registry about the unfair competition I'm told, "we are here to regulate podiatry if anyone who is not a duly qualified & registered as a podiatrist is calling themselves a podiatrist, then can go after them. Otherwise, we can't touch a "foot specialist", or a "foot care nurse", or a sports store selling custom made orthotics. Do good treatments for your patients and business will get better. Don't worry about the unfair competition."

In retrospect, I should have hired tutors to help me during my undergrad in university to get my marks in the high 80 percentile and this may have helped me to get into dental school as opposed to podiatry college. BTW the reason I chose podiatry over dentistry was that there were (and there still are) 5 times as many ads in the local Yellow Pages for dental clinics compared to podiatry clinics. 15 years later I know why.
