"I would say that an ingrown toenail operation is low risk. If I were administering the local the patient would have pulse oximetry, dynamap BPs q 3 minutes, and a 3 lead EKG.
But I believe it is perfectly acceptable for a local case of such low morbidity to be done without an IV and at the discretion of the DPM with minimal if any monitoring of the vital signs. (not that I recommend this)"

I used to do up to 8 ingrown nails a day. Do you really think that pods are hooking up 3-leads and worrying about BP's and O2 sats when doing these? All I cared about was whether or not they had blood flowing to the digit (Capillary Venous compression and TP/DP pulses) and whether or not they were allergic to the local anesthetic.

The whole procedure takes less time than it would to get a BP and hook up a EKG. And if any pod wanted to start an IV on me just to inject my toe and take off a nail, I'd leave very quickly.

Should my dentist do all that before numbing me up to fill a cavity?
