FOOT CARE BY NURSES OUT OF CONTROL !!

From: Harold Vogler, DPM
Subj: Foot Care, Out of Control, Foot Care Nurse Alliance of North America

It is quite incredible what is happening out there. Everyone is in everyone else's back pocket. Now this thing with nurses/RN's will only escalate--the AOFAS will endorse this heavily and hire these
people quickly.

Check out this website for the FOOTCARE NURSE ALLIANCE
OF NORTH AMERICA that provoked Dr.Vogler's comments above:

HERE'S WHERE THEY MAKE THE CASE FOR THEIR PLACE
IN DELIVERING FOOT CARE:

"Care of the feet has long been a nursing responsibility. Since early times, Nurses have played a large role promoting health, and foot care has been no small priority. In addition to providing
(and teaching about) basic foot hygiene, Nurses assume the invaluable task of teaching patients and their care-givers about the importance of prevention, which goes far in preserving ones quality of life."

Subj: May G-d Protect Us from Nurses

Dr. Peslar's letter in the 4/13 Newsflash was scary. May G-d almighty protect us podiatrists. Because if this is the type of thing that (some) podiatrist's are up against, then the future of (primary
care or of general) podiatry is worrisome. Why doesn't the community college's College of Nurses just forget all the pretense and make being a foot health nurse a correspondence course, the type offered on the back of match book covers.

I wonder how long this will take to inundate the states.

Subj: For Routine Foot Care, Why doesn't Dr. Hoy hire a Podiatrist?

I have a great suggestion for Dr. Hoy (Just say no to pedicures, April 16 Newsflash), who stated in his letter that, "One day we may have a nurse come in only to care for nails of those who have risk factors." Surely Dr. Hoy has read the many online
letters from many members of our profession that have a problem with nurses rendering routine foot care. In addition, Dr. Hoy undoubtedly knows that many in our profession, justifiably so, have made and probably will continue to make cutting nails a good part of their practice. So.... instead of Dr. Hoy having a
nurse come in only to care for those at risk needing nail care, why doesn't Dr. Hoy hire a podiatrist instead? Novel idea, huh?

I am certain that there is many podiatrists that would love to do Dr. Hoy's nail work. I would go so far to say that many podiatrists would be more than happy to make such an arrangement with Dr. Hoy. I'd be the first to acknowledge that podiatry is practiced in
vastly different manners. I'm certain that there are many podiatrists that turn their noses up at doing nail care. To each his own...Different strokes for different folks, etc. I'm sure that everyone knows of fellow podiatrists that refuse to debride
hyperkeratoses and do have "staff" do this work. But, instead of hiring a nurse, I am sure that he can easily find a colleague that not only can use the money, but also enjoys doing this type of
work that is still for better or worse the foundation of podiatry. In such a manner, Dr. Hoy could kill two birds with one stone! He can help his own profession by keeping such work in-house, and he can still practice as he chooses and just as importantly
patients are still getting a "doctor" to render their medical foot care.

Cordially,
