You are a DPM and I would appreciate your suggestions if applicable. Please read this message and reply with your input through wisdom via painful and gratifying experiences.

This is my first semester at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fl. I heard about this forum from my collegue at Pod school, and some other students are beginning to have second thoughts about THEIR career choice.

I have also had such thoughts. A very good friend from my undergraduate years decided to go to podiatry school(Barry) in his junior year, skipping his senior year. I didn't blame him at the time because he was 26 years old and just had his first child. He and his wife were living terribly in debt because she couldn't work and his income were all loans. The opportunity of him going to podiatry school arose without him even taking his Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) nor getting his bachelar's degree, so of course he was ecstatic. This very FRIEND started Pod school in Barry and after a year and a half I lost total communication with him.

I graduated in August 2002 with a BS in Biology from FIU. I took the MCAT and scored very LOW, and took it again...studied harder...scored lower. I underwent severe depression because I desired to be a doctor so bad. Of course, one would say, "go over-seas," but I'm engaged to my girlfriend--which I've been with for 7 years now--and I worked half a year 7 days a week two jobs for our wedding date set for May 15, 2004.

Well going back to my friend...just wanted to give you a quick bio., I decided to go to Barry's Pod school because I thought that I would be a 'Specialty Physician--without really going to MD/DO school.' I started this semester and I wasn't feeling good especially after my intro. to podiatry class when a couple of DPM's came in to explain the profession, due to SO MANY restrictions per state and so forth. It so happens that after that class, THAT FRIEND peered his face through the door. I screamed out his name and he smiled and told me to step out and talk to him. He went by to greet his friend still in Pod school, because he was in vacation. I hugged him and asked him where he had gone. He said that he started this program and he left to ROSS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE at Dominica to start over again and get his MD degree. The debt of this profession, his experiences in this profession, and guidance from other DPMs made him attempt a different route. He also said that the DPM program brought a lot of hostility in his home because his wife was unsure that his occupation would bring in steady income to pay-off his debts...cutting it short it cost him almost 80K and a divorce. Now he is finishing his last semester of his second year in Med School and take his USMLE step 1, to commence his clinical rotations in Miami.
He stressed for me to get out as soon as possible, and to read these forums. So far from all the messages I've read, there are no POSITIVE messages that can make me think HE is wrong. Can you give me some advice? I'm about to just switch and get a master's in biomedical sciences and reapply to DO school not MD, or maybe even teach and receive steady income to pay-off the debt which I have just accrued wrongfully this semester.

Thank You.
Robert (1st semester)
