I'll make it simple

I am a happy, positive, and successful DPM. I have not experienced any of the negative situations that are described by many of the negative posters. I have been in practice 20 years and am involved in several organizations. I am respected by my patients and receive referrals from MDs/DOs including orthopedic surgeons. My take home pay before taxes averages 225,000/annum.
Now having said that, if your goal, dream, passion is to be an MD then please leave podiatry and follow that dream. You can suceed as a DPM but if you are trying to fill a void with this profession my experience says you will not.
Many in this profession chose it as a second choice. Many have accepted it but some will never be happy regardless of their income. In my era foreign schools were limited and without loan options. That would explain the prevelance of DO, DDS, DPM, and DC applicants at that time. Today many good, legitimate schools exist with financial assistance(I think this partially explains the podiatry applicant pool drop). It is still not easy and some do not make it. Research of the schools and state licensing requirements are essential!
If you have researched podiatry and feel as though you will be happy then welcome and do not let naysayers sway you. If not good luck in the islands!
