Root Type Orthotics linked to Destabilization of the Pelvis and Spineby (no login)Potential Negative Impact Mechanical Type Orthotics have on the Pelvis and Spine Dear Colleague, Research recently completed suggests that standard type mechanical orthotics (insoles that incorporate heel wedges, forefoot wedges, arch supports into their design) have the potential to destabilize the postural complex by increasing overall postural tonicity (unlevel the pelvis, increase scoliotic and kyphotic curves). In this study, I used media pressure readings (mpR) to monitor the changes in postural tonicity when using different types of mechanico and proprioceptive devices (mpR readings became skewed when using mechanical orthotics, more normalized when using proprioceptive insoles). Fusco in Italy, using 3D VRS Formetric, demonstrated the unleveling of the pelvis and increased kyphotic and scoliotic curves when using mechanical type orthotics (composed of various materials). (INSTRUMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE CONSEQUENCES ON THE PELVIS AND ON THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN CAUSED BY THE USE OF VARIOUS ORTHOTICS, PERFORMED BY MEANS OF THE POSTUROGRAPHIC RUG 3D VRS FORMETRIC, PUBLISHED ON THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE: HTTP://WWW.KSITALIA.IT/ENGL/VALUTAZIONESTRUMENT.HTM) I believe more research needs to be done on this subject. Given the commonality of clinically using orthotics for foot, knee and back problems, we need to have a better understanding of the impact these devices have on the postural complex, foot to jaw.
