Don't do it.by Anonymous (no login)20 years ago I was in podiatry college and we were being told that podiatry is entering a golden phase. At every foot race there were more participants in 10Ks and marathons, sports medicine and orthotics were podiatry's field of expertise and so podiatrists would do very well -it was almost guaranteed. Since then the orthopods have taken over foot surgery (minor and reconstructive). BTW GPs refer patients requiring such surgery to their buddy MD orthopods not to podiatrists. Sports medicine is being done by physios and chiropractors and they do orthotics for their patients -which, often times, were referred to them by GPs and not to podiatrists. There are no other opportunities for podiatrists if they are trying to find a career related position. IBM, the post office or schools don't hire staff podiatrists; however, they do hire RNs to screen their employees' health problems and for vaccination programs. In my 20 years of experience I have found that many podiatrists are struggling financially and those that are doing better are the ones who have spouses that have really good career positions. There are exceptions and some podiatrists in my area are making more than $60K pa after overhead but most are making less than that. This is podiatry reality in my area and I'm sure that in other areas podiatrists making less than 60K pa after overhead are the exception. However, when I read posts of overly optimistic podiatry students on this Forum I see that they are brainwashed just like I was when I was a student. If I had a chance to do it over again, I would have chosen MD (even a good off-shore med school) or DDS or DC or DO or DVM or even RN. from IP address 199.212.26.244 Goto Forum Home |
