Re: Is a DPM really a waste of time ?by Ladyfootdoc (no login)Podiatry is a good field, but it is very expensive to obtain this degree. I graduated in 2001 with three children and a husband and undergraduate student loan debt. My totsl debt is $225,000 with interest accumulating daily. I started a private practice with only financial assistance of my spouse. There is not one bank in the US that will loan a substantial mount of mony to a new Podiatrist, or any physician with this amount of debt, and no collateral. There are no means for government repayment of loans for Podiatrists, the starting salary to work for another Podiatrist, is equvalent to about 30,000, if they're being generous. There are hardly any jobs in hospitals or institutions for Podiatrists. You will be successful if you want it, work for it, and make it happen all by yourself. PSR PPMR RPR POR are all useless, if you don't find the confidence in yourself to be a success. Allopathic medicine has more opportunity for loan repayment, and a larger starting salary and more job opportunities, and a longer residency. There are many fields who do not respect what we do aqs Podiatrists, but you must be confident in yourself and enjoy what you do to be happy and successful. Hope this helps!!!
