Out of touch

This individual is out of touch. Last year several top notch programs went unmatched. The lower applicant pool has made it a buyers market. To this poster just call the CPME and they will confirm this. Pull has nothing to do with it. Back in the day when 50% did not obtain a residency this was a common statement. Yet when I matched a 2 year spot back when there were 12 in the country I had absolutely no pull. I was shocked since I had been told these same things. As far as salaries, ask todays grads who are 1-2 years out what they are making. For this poster I know it's hard to believe but the amounts I listed are true. A lot has to do with the mainstreaming of our profession. Yes we have a long way to go but compared to 20 years ago we are light years ahead. Ask yourself even if you are correct ( which I don't agree) today kids get jobs in ortho practices, multi disciplinary groups, and are offered recruitment packages how many of those existed just 10-20 years ago? Even the army requires a 3 year residency demonstrating the changes that have occur. Just read the description of an army DPM today and compare it with 10 years earlier. Are we still discriminated against? Absolutely but so are DOs and they are a generation ahead of us. Ask maxillofacial surgeons from 30 years ago if they thought their grads would have what they have today. Back then they couldn't get hospital privileges and now many are DMD/MDs take their own hip grafts and admission H&Ps. Look it's the half full or empty scenario. Yea there are times I still question podiatry as do some MDS about medicine but overall if you haven't seen the advances in our profession then you are out of touch or in denial. For the young, understand the second class citizen status that all medical professional experience except MDs. However, this profession has opportunities and even someone of my generation doesn't comprehend all of the success. I just saw "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" again. One of my favorite lines applies to this generational assessment. In it a statement is you see yourself as a black man I see myself as a man. Some DPMs see themselves as podiatric physicians, I see myself as a physician and surgeon who has a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. The MDs will try to convince you that you are the former. But you will know better.
