You go dude!

I think his comment about Radiology being outsourced is a very good point. I worked for a radiologist for a year when an undergrad. Getting paid minimum wage I processed the films and took them to the radiologist, they read them, and then I took them back to the ER. Now that most of these films are going digital my job could easily be replaced by the internet. Ultimately that means that most of the radiologists making almost half a million a year are also expendable. Interestingly McDonald's was going to do that with their drive-thru order takers. Instead of talking into the machine and speaking to someone inside the building you would be talking to someone in India. I'm not sure where McDonald's stands on doing this but I know right now that the way the insurance companies are going, if someone were to offer a service of reading at minimum just x-rays for a fraction of the cost then the insurance companies would jump on that chance. If a small portion of films (the ones easily diagnosed) were to be read over seas then a good portion of Radiologists could be expended. Heck, most of the films I took to the radiologist had already been appropriately diagnosed by the ER doc anyway. It will be interesting to see what jobs are lost here in about 20 to 30 years when pharmaceutical companies are charging 100 to 200 times what they are charging now for drugs. The reasearch and technology that goes into current drugs is miniscule compared to what's to come. I predict "smart" microscopic computers (nanochips) that will flow freely throughout our bodies attacking diseases. Maybe this is a little extreme but its not crazy to think that some kinds of budget cuts like this will have to occur for much more effective treatments such as these.
