Work Stopped?

Can anyone tell me if work has stopped on the new rink? I'm only asking this because I've heard on the grapevine that there is a petition going round as the local schools and residents are not happy with the rink being there. Thinkl it has more to do with what will happen to it later on.

I don't know that much work has started, according to the Phoenix site the perimiter fence was recently being erected which was a planning condition. They're now saying the concrete's being laid next week, odd considering the car park surface is apparently still largely intact.

A bit late for that isnt it? i mean, the rink has gone through the whole planning process and the local residents had ample time to object (IIRC, the council recieved 1 objection).

As for the concrete going down next week....who knows.

The real story is that no decision has been made on import numbers so they don't know whether they'll need 9 or 11 import navvies to do the work.

Hopefully this should be sorted within a couple of weeks.

As far as I'm aware, there is no truth in the rumour that Jay and Thommo have been asked to do the builders' laundry.

Question and I know it's a controversial one

Can you log objections to planning that's granted with conditions (like currnently that for the rink)

Yes you can especially when the conditions are covered by teh enviromental health department includeing things like noise and music licences if they can prove that it will have a depremental effect on there quality of life.

The Union street residents association successfully overturned planning permission on these grounds as they were not explored in the original planning application.

If this is the case especially with mid week games and the need for music etc then they have a case.

As seen in the past with Trafford council I will not belive there is a rink until I see it with my own eyes

to clarify last posting.
Yes the petition cannot stop the building but can make life diffcult for games over and above stipulated.

Also make life difficult with a licence to play music etc which ha to be applied for seperatley and annually.

If there is a petition as stated then running a ice hockey team could be made difficult.

How mant residents are actually going to be in earshot of the music??

It would have to be VERY loud for them to hear it!!

As for how busy the area will be I think Tesco is already doing that traffic wise.

What do the residents of Altrincham want?

Regeneration in the area and somewhere for the kids to go and stop them hanging around on the streets and the bus station vandalising stuff through boredom and somewhere families would be happy to move to as there would be plenty for their children to do!

Or

Let Altrincham fall apart around them and then possibly lose value on there property because there would be nothing to attract people to want to come and live there and if people don't visit boring Altrincham then shops would have to close and revenue in the area would be lost!

All I can say is the residents of Altrincham need to STOP being boring old farts and STOP moaning and protesting against anything that is a bit loud or things that might cause gatherings of more than 50 people in one place!!

A majority of the residents in that area wear hearing aids anyway!!!!!!

Another of my awkward questions, have they got building regulations approval as well as planning approval?

Would love to see the ice rink built there and it is a shame that where ever it is built then it will cause a disturbance to the local community.

Also I hope that it is succesful as a community ice rink which is what the area needs replaceing.

Secondly I hope we have a sponsor to run a english league team sooner than later

On the down side though there appeared to be a lot of restrictions that could make haveing a Elite Ice Hockey Team especially where the number of fixtures is concerned.

Unfourtunatley if residents so wished they could make life difficult for neil and co

The residents of Altrincham should change it's name to Royston Vasey!!!!!!

Or they could build a fence around it and have a pretend monster in the woods to stop people from trying to leave and dress like Amish people!!! LOL!!!!

Trouble is it is easy to laugh until it is our quality of life that is being destroyed by a venue.

PS I dont live in Altrincham

I think you have a point Mark, the old rink got a bit loud very close by at times with music but at least the number of people going in and out and hanging about outside was fewer with the capacity being a lot lower. Also I think you have to remember that this time few people or even nobody will have bought their houses nearby knowing that a rink was going to be there.

You can't say it's the same as Tesco being there because for all it's open long hours you don't get the concentration of people all at once and I imagine it doesn't blast music you can hear outside either!

come on,lets be honest, when the rink was full of kids no one complained, except when they were closing.Alty is full of boring old farts who have nothing better to do except complain "that we pay our rates".So do I and I welcome any development with open arms, its about time summat was done with our money by one of the richest councils in Gtr Manchester!!!The cinema has gone up quick enough,is it because it is to cater for blue chip customers??

Well said acepast I couldn't agree with you more!!!!

The difference between the new rink and old rink is the old rink was in the middle of a housing estate and when you were outside you could only just hear the music from inside the reason people complained was at closing time when people were leaving but to be fair they didn't complain that much!!

The new rink will not be that close to residential dwellings apart from the new developement opposite the leasure center which I don't think will be a problem.

What the residents of Alty need to realise is the town can only benefit by having something like this as it will encourage more families in the area as parents can drop kids off at the rink and then go shopping for a couple of hours or go to the cinema.

It must be an improvement to the bar culture that Alty is going through at the moment.

I bet if they wanted planning permission to build a huge bingo hall there would be NO protests then!!!!

They need to get out of the dark ages and move with the times!!!!!!

Well all of that aside...is the thing actually getting anywhere nearer being built or not?

"Bank Holiday" is the latest reason offered on the Phoenix site for nothing happening...

With regard to old farts and not wanting change remindeed me of a meeting, I attended. of the council at an open forum that was discussing the pro's and con's of Thompsons bid for a new venue.
When the meeting was opened for general discussion some block who lived opposite the proposed site, where Tesco is now, said that he would prefer to look at the bomb site carpark that was there than for the site to be developed for ANYTHING nevewr mind a ice rink.
Anyway he has ended up with blackout curtains to eliminate the light polution from the shop on stilts.
Just out of interest I wonder who agreed to that planning application or did the mega rich a minute store get it as a matter of course??.
IMO Altrincham needs change, other than wine bars and eating places, and the developmentsw that are ongoing and planned can only improve a dying old market town. But developers need to realise that to charge rediculous rents for property in the town centre does not encourage wouldbe small buisness tenants.

Well one thing is for sure there don't seem to be any firm answers over on the Phoenix site as to where things are up to with the construction.

It is after all the merry month of May..but some of them don't seem to be at all bothered, I would if I were them.

Wasnt the original plans for a permanent rink meant to be ready in 2 years by September 2006.

We have waited this long even if it is delayed again and will not be built before 2007. The new temporary permanent rink is BEING built we are led to belive. At least we will have what we all wanted a new community rink for Altrincham

I think under the temp planning permission they had up to three years to start and had to have it demolished by five to make way for the permanent one.
