Freeze fixtures moved to help Phoenix?

No doubt a big help to the Phoenix and relatively lucrative for Deeside rink, but a bit unfair on the Freeze don't you think?

No, I don't think so - little difference between Freeze playing in the afternoon and the evening.

I presume that the Freeze were happy to move otherwise the Phoenix could presumably have played in the afternoon if forced to. The rink and the Freeze are both owned by Flintshire Council so I guess there's money being made overall.

Last thing is probably the most important though and both Blackburn and Ice Sheffield will be benefitting in due course.

It makes more sense for us to have our games earlier on Sundays as it is better all round for our players the away players that have to travel distance and the fans. We can all get home earlier and get a good nights sleep before getting up for work the next day.

The main factor being most of the players in our league hold down full time jobs as well as playing yet the Elite League guys don't (apart from some of the brits who don't get paid as well!)

I think that puts pay to any argument from the Pheonix.

I suppose I was thinking of the players having to make an early start on Sunday AM, even worse for the away team!

I keep looking at those "rink construction" photos, is it me or does it just not look like anything's happening?

No significant progress other than earth being shovelled about and bits of plastic and metal lying around
No builders' signage at site or logos on jackets (not like a construction company to miss a PR opp)

I know they claim they've had problems with the land...but they got the original go ahead months ago, how can they have only just discovered all these land problems, and then put people on site soon after, only to not appeaer do very much anyway?

(sorry for cynicism and I know someone will feel the need to come on here and put me straight, but really....!)

Icy - surprised at you being cynical..

The severity of the problems I think were out of the blue - greater land contamination than they thought and problems coming from vibrations from the tram station.

Where they have been at fault (or naive) is that they were letting the builders get on with the job. Now if you or I had been running the scheme, perhaps we might have been asking a few more questions in August and before as to whether we'd see a rink in Sept/Oct.

At the Sept meeting, I have seen that they were told not to expect the frame going up before 20 September. Any further delay with the frame (and I'm pretty sure its not started yet and its the 22nd) may well indicate the possibility of a further delay in the rink's opening date no matter what the usual suspects might have you believe in the 30 Nov date including lots of contingency room. The 30 Nov date has always been said to be an estimated date which is not quite how the faithful are regarding it.

PS the builders are 'major' sponsors of the Phoenix during the delay tho' the badge is quite hard to see.

Like all construction jobs the foundation work is hidden and does not show and it can look like not much is happening. I pass the site almost every day and the work that has go into the foundations is massive. The large vertical machine that shows on the pictures has been used to place the large concrete posts that were lay on the site for a couple of weeks down into the earth, something like 20ft down. The job on at the moment looks to be reinforced steel cages to strengthen the footings. When the rink goes up you will not see any of this vital first stage.
The question of whether the rink will open by 30th November only the builders know.
My mate in Wales has just completed a floor in a barn convertion and all you see for £3000 is a concrete slab.

I see Nipper is carrying on the good work by taking a under 15 team to Canada in February. For some season my post about it on the Phoenix site has been removed??? Censorship???

Probably because

a) It may have been on the wrong section
b) There is already a post on it in the junior section.

Take your pick.
