I found this regarding the soldiers dressed in red:

"Definitively, the soldiers you are talking about ARE Zuoaves. The ones represented are primarily evident in the scenes of Fredericksburg. They are evident in the initial establishment of the 'beach head' or the covering of the pontoon builders. Then they are evident in the looting of the city of Fredericksburg.

They were NOT foreign. They were Americans. And the ones represented were Union. However, there WERE Confederate Zuoaves as well. These units chose to adopt the French style of uniform which was established during that nations campaign in Algiers. These types of military uniforms were considered very stylish or fashionable.

There was also a comment about them being visible in Gettysburg, most notably the death of General John Reynolds as the Union infantry advanced to 'save' Bufords cavalry on the second day.

Having acted in the film, I took the opportunity to don one of those uniforms and I have to admit that apart from being 'fashionable' for the period, they were INCREDIBLY comfortable for fighting in. We only had two days of filming left when we shot the scene of the Zuoaves shooting across the river and I had a blast. "
